Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?! ~~~~~~SOLVED!!!

Argh, i'm so f**** pissed...

So the new built B18a1 idled and ran BEAUTIFULLY... i love the torque of it...
Screw Vtec, who needs it... I've got 600 miles on it so far.

ANYWAY>>> Drivin home today... i did a couple little 1st and 2nd gear pulls... In the middle of second... my car bogged and popped to ---- for a SPLIT SECOND @ 5k rpm, then kept going just fine. Felt like WICKED bad detonation... but WHY?!?!?! i come to the light before my college... And i hear a tick tick tick tick.... It never did that before... and i had perfect air fuels... and no detonation... And now this?!

One tick per every revolution.... For a second, i said it CANT be my car...
I got home, and YEP!!! IT'S MINE... wtf.

TT rods, ACL bearings, Wesico pistons, ARP head bolts... everything else is stock.

No smoke whatsoever... So i doubt its a cracked ringland or such...

Think its the Rod bearings? Spun a bearing possibly? I dont hear the tick when its driving... only @ idle... and it's very pronounced. Valve? Rod bearing?

Rod bearings are easy to replace. Drop the oil pan, and pull them out. Crank bearings SUCK...

What do you all think? What does rod knock or spun bearings sound like? Or whats a cracked ringland sound like? Or anyone think it may be a valve, or lifter?

something that doesnt like low oil volume/pressure

exacly right , sounds like a bearing to me.
same thing happened to my brothers GTiR , ticking noise at idle.

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?!

---- i hate bearings...

I just changed my oil too after break-in!!!!

I went to full synthetic tho... that aid in this?

It couldn't be a crank bearing i dont think... It's gotta be a rod bearing right? i'm soooo ------ pissed... i just fixed all my exhaust leaks, changed the oil... engines just now broken in... and it idles SO DAMN SMOOTH and quiet!!!... ---- this.

Yeh normally when a shitty oil is used and then you run good oil , good luck man bearings sux bigtime

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?!

Have a go at removing the oil pan , that should reveal the answer

haha, damn, ugly pics!!!

I'm 100% sure its not the HG. ARP's, and only 9lbs... No overheating or nothing... No smoking either.

This weekend i'm deff pullin the oil pan... Hopefully its just some rod bearings... 30$ an a 2 hour job... HOPEFULLY!!!

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?!

good luck and hopefully its nothing too serious. how does the new built engine feel, besides the tick? Fix this problem, up the boost, and get some ripper vids. I'm excited

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?!

go Buy a steathascope so u can hear where the noise is coming from.

DirtydseriesWoot 03-30-2007 01:19 AM

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?!

easy way to find out if its a rod bearing...

let the car idle and pull one plug wire out and see if the ticking stops if it doesent plug it back up and goto the next cylinder repeat untill u find if one stops ticking..

the reason this works is cause when u take the load off the bearing it will stop knocking if none of the plug wires help when you take them off its another prob hg maybe hope this helps

Dude is that an oem valvecover? Or did you weld in some filler panels? I have never seen one like that.

did you boost your motor before you broke it in? please tell me you didn't......

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?!

Is your motor tuned? Who built your motor? I had a ticking problem while my motor was being dyno tuned. What happened was the rings butted and scared and eggshaped the sleeves. Pull your head out and see how your cylinder walls look.

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?!

No, not an OEM valve cover... I used aluminum filler bondo type ----, i forget what its called.

The spark plug wire pulling idea.... i'll try it... Always gotta check the easy ---- first.
Pulling the head off to look @ the cylinder walls??? LAST resort haha.

And yes, i boosted this engine from day one. It's a built engine, and my fourth engine in this car... i got the air fuels running right, and did a couple quick pulls to seat the rings... then i drove it normally for 500 miles.

I built the engine myself, as well as the last two built D16's i've had.
If i can get this tick figured out, i'm throwin in my precicion 880cc injectors to have some more fun.

I'M STILL STUMPED why i had detonation for a split second, then it was running fine.... Like it was bad... Felt like Anti-lock brakes for a second, w/ a backfire... Then it started pulling like normal again. Engine runs strong for 500+ miles.... i change to synthetic oil... i drive for 50 more miles... pull a little... then put put VROOM.... now tick. argh.

I'll try my det can as a stethoscope right now~

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!! pRAISE THE LORD !!!!!!!!!!

i'm so glad i found it...

Used my det cans, and located the source of the noise coming from the exhaust side of the head... specifically between cylinders 3 and 4... I LOVE THE DET CANS!!! they work magic...

So i pulled the valve cover... and the adjuster nut for the lifter was loose BY HAND!!!! i was wigglin em all through top dead center... and when i got to cylinder 4... the inner exhaust lifter's adjuster nut was almost off!!!!

Tightened it back up to spec, and car sounds quiet and beautiful again.

WOOT WOOT... another honda fixed... I no longer doubt my engine building ability haha.

DET CANS FTMFW!!!!

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy. awsome my friend went through all the troubles of a rod knock and it was just a valve cover gromet in the head knocking around. scary but got fixed quik.

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?! ~~~~~~SOLVED!!!

awesome.. that random detonation could have been from something clogging the fuel system change ur fuel filter to be safe..

the spark plug wire trick works trust me :)

Yea, it makes sense. I tried the spark plug wire thing, but it didnt change anything... WHICH ALSO made me feel better! lol.

That's awesome!

Nothing like the feeling of thinking you are going to have to rip the motor apart and then finding out that it was something small and simple all along. That's a much better feeling than the realization that the motor has to come out. lol

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?! ~~~~~~SOLVED!!!

That's actually a pretty common thing on LS heads. I usually re-check valve lash clearances after a couple hundred miles or so...the constant heating up and cooling down on new builds tends to loosen things. Once you've gotten a few thousand miles on the clock they should stay put, but still never hurts to check them every once and a while. ;)

my did the same thing when i bought it i think its a valve but i didnt fix it a friend of the family did

Re: Tick Tick Tick.... WTF?!?! ~~~~~~SOLVED!!!

yeah its common for nonvtec heads... you have to tighten the F#$% out of em to keep em from coming loose. i actually had one come completely off once (thank god it landed in a corner and didnt hurt anything).

oh and adding cams makes it worse.
