thoughts on my setup and intercooler "design"
Im in the process of building a stock internal'd D series...Y7 longblock, y8 manifold, IHI RHB5 (subaru), HF mani, dsm 450cc injectors, chipped ECU, and 1g DSM SMIC.
Anyways, I'd like everyones thoughts on this intercooler setup. for ease of installation and running charge pipes, i think im goign to mount my DSM SMIC horizontal in the place where the stock airbox sat in my 91 hatch, and fabricate a ram air scoop directed at the intercooler, much like the 2g RX7 turbo and the new WRX. This would be my daily driven intercooler setup. For the track, or fun times on the street, I'd like to make a box that encloses the intercooler, and fill it with dry ice, since i work with dry ice daily and can get it for free. Anyways, i'd just liek to know what you guys think about what kind of gains can be accomplished with the dry ice setup..Can you have the intercooler too cold? Is there a more efficient way to do this? And also, would a larger FMIC intercooler work better for cooling than the "dry icebox" DSM SMIC? |
Re:thoughts on my setup and intercooler "design"
Personally I'm not a big fan of the Side mount IC's.. Honestly I'm a show off, and I like to show people my big ass fmic, lol. They work good and are very effiecent, but then again some people cannot afford the big ass overpriced IC's, thats why good guys like tyrus and customcoach make them affordable. But they arnt exactly easy to install. The starion intercoolers are pretty easy to install, but those are tough to find, and god damn people want gold for them. DSM side mounts work well if they get flow, I dont know about cutting a hole in your hood, if your all for that, go for it. Not my taste, and sure as ---- you will get some heat soak from that thing sitting in your engine bay.
air-water setups, for daily driving, another thing I dont care for much. Air-Air intercoolers are really the way to go unless your drag racing. Or youre really hardcore and want to fill your resovior with Ice everyday twice a day, heh. Check out Beaus race car, he used a 1g DSM intercooler, welded a box around it, works pretty damn good. https://www.homemadeturbo.com/beau/beau_racecar.html Pics are towards the bottom. Jeff |

a guy here in town built one of those. He was trying to sell it last month, he might still have it if anyone wants a "dsm" water ic.

Re:thoughts on my setup and intercooler "design"
well do you get good flow with a sidemount if you mount it down in the fenderwell like you would a CAI??...I already have both of my blinkers taken out, is that a big enough hole for some(or should I say ENOUGH?) air to get in there??? let me know

Re:thoughts on my setup and intercooler "design"
I just thought the "ram air scoop" effect would work decent, seeing as how 2g RX7s and the new WRX has that.. maybe weld a plate or something on the bottom of the intercooler so it doesnt get so hot..
And also, like i said, i can get 12lb blocks of dry ice at my job for free or a couple bucks, it takes almost 24 hours for a block that size to totally disintegrate :D |
Re:thoughts on my setup and intercooler "design"
I think front mount is probably much easier, better looking, and less hassle.
