t3 on a 1.5L.. what to expect?!

Ok now that that's through.. I have aquired a t3 from a saab 9000. The turbine A/R .48, compressor A/R .46, and I have a 1.5L engine to mount it on (1495cc to be exact). My engine, stock, is rated at 92hp / 98ft/lbs..

Basically, I'm not curious about max obtainable power or anyway.. I just want to know what a t3 of this size on an engine of around this particular output acts like. What is a good estimate for the rpm at which the turbo will be fully spooled, basically?

I actaully have been reading through some books on the subject of turbocharging engines and the theory of it all.. But I guess I just want to see what some real-world experience of others has netted them. So let me know any personal insights that you might have!

it really depends on how much boost you are planning on running. My t3 with .48 hotside like yours on my 1.6 (almost the same) spools fully to 7.5 @ 3800-4000 but I get a full 5 or 6 by like 3500. It will spool nicely on your motor. I did a greddy kit on my buddy's DX 1.5 and it spools just like my t3 does. The t3 is a really nice match for most any of the d-series motors. You will definatley be happy with it.

Thanks. What I'm trying to go for here is street drivability, not all out top-end, low-ET horsepower. Basically, I want something that would be very resonsive if I were to do something like autoX or rally.. I don't wanna just go fast in a strait line!

I actaully am not boosting a D-series motor. I didn't want to come out and say that, because I still wanted to hear what you D-series guys are doing. I'm actaully going to be boosting a Hyundai Alpha engine (1.5L sohc). Similar in power output, but it makes more torque than horsepower as it is over-square rather than under. It also has a lower redline, of about 6K. On the naturally aspirated motor, power tends to fall off at around 5K though. This is one of the reasons I want boost! hehe ;D

Also, Hyundai has produced a turbo version of this engine previously. In 93-95 this basicly identical engine was used inthe Scoupe turbo. It had 7.5:1 cast pistons (yes, low. Hyundai was nervous) as opposed to 10:1, a slightly different cam profile, and piston cooling oil squirters in the block. The engine was fitted with a t15, only making around 115hp and like 120 or so ft/lbs. The t15 is a little too small for the engine, as it does build boost very low, a little above 2k, but runs out of juice at 5K. Scoupe turbo guys have been know to swap out the t15 for t25's and this shifts the boost curve higher on the rpm, all the way to redline, as well as makes more hp.

With my n/a version of this engine, I hope that maybe a t3 would be a decent match, as I will be trying to use higher compresion 8.7:1 forged pistons (higher than scoupe turbo 7.5:1 .. it is still lower than stock 10:1 though) And so hopefully will make more power while my car is still below boost rpm.

Also, the fact that my car is making its full torque output by around 3K rpm would help me build boost sooner than a comparable displacement honda motor. Hopefully I could reach full boost at a little lower rpm.. hopefully is the key word..

Turbo for autox? I always thought that would be a bad idea becasue of the instant power when building boost. That's kinda like spraying while autox'n. :P

I have a 1.5(D series) and a T3 boosting 10 psi and it is great. The reason I think it would be a bad idea in autox is because I lose traction at the top of the gears and as you know that wouldn't be the greatest thing in autox.

Yea.. I know what you mean. But basically what I'm saying is, I want a turbo fitted for street performance, so it performs well under those conditions. i'm not saying I would actaully be doing autoX and stuff.. But I plan on trying it while my car is still n/a.. So I figure if I like it.. and there is a class for street modified, up to the point that a forced induction system has been added.. I dunno if there is or not. But either way, if the turbo is fitted properly, it should be able to produce boost to bump up hp, and basically perform like a larger engine.

This is basically what I'm asking.. If a t3 would seem to be too big for an engine of this size, to net this type of performance, then maybe I had better go with a t25 or 28. This is what I'm trying to feel out..
