retap it, or heli coil

Re: stripped turbo bolt
super-difficult. I just broke one off in my brand new T3. By the time I got it out, it was all fuckered up. I broke drill bits trying to get it out and tapping was out of the question. I just made it as big as possible and through-bolted it. Hopefully you can too.

Re: stripped turbo bolt
me, I punch a centering mark in the middle, drill a smal 1/8 hole all the way through and then drill with the 5/16 bit. Some cutting fluid is required (WD40 does the job) and re sharpening the drill bit on a bench grinder will be rquired a few times. Then, you can tap no problem. Try not to break the tap in the hole because that, THAT is a big shitty problem.
To avoid breaking a turbine bolt, before ever trying to unscrew it, you pound on it from both opposite sides with a large punch and a mass. This is gonna loosen the bolt and if you always do it no mather what, you'll never break one again. |
Re: stripped turbo bolt
Ive busted a stud in the turbine housing before. Takes for ------- ever to get out. Easy-outs didnt work for ----. I ended up drilling it multiple times w/ progressively larger bits, and then using a tap for the final clean up.
I install new studs often when I do major work on my car, and always give them a nice coat of PB blaster before they go in. I also only put them in hand tight; letting the nut do all the clamping/torqing. I hav'nt had one come loose, or get stuck in the housing doing this. |
