Default This is some crazy ----

Well my freind drives a 98 eclipse gst. About a week ago his car had a very small oil leak when he parked (talking like a few drops on the ground after all night). Well today he calls me and tells me that his car is smoking like crazy and his turbo is making a loud *** scraping sound and the car cuts off on him. Went up there and the car was smoking like a ----------er. So we took the air filter off and checked the fans and the fan was almost non existant and had like infinite play. Anyone ever heard of a turbo just completly blowing its bearings in a day while running stock boost like this? I have seen some fucked up turbos before but this one when you wiggled the fan you it almost fell out of the turbo. Any ideas how this could have happened?

Mitsubishi turbos will do that. If you check, I bet the nut is missing or loose on the shaft. I have seen that happen lots of times, the nut backs off, the fins hit the housing and the whole turbo goes to hell.

i have a turbo like that right here, well the fins anyway. the shaft between the compressor and exhaust turbine wheels broke and scraped the ---- out of both housings not to mention how much oil/smoking was going on, must have been one hell of a smoke screen... btw that was a SAAB T3 turbo...
