So my shit blew up already.

Someone hinted at me getting this turbonetics rebuilt before i ran it. Althought there was no shaft play, and it ran smooth, it was just dirty, after i cleaned it, it seemed alright. Guess not.

I got about 200 miles on it, and it looks like a fin caught the housing and just shredded.

Few questions

1. Is there some sort of secret to get the shaft out? i put the thing in a vice to hold the hot side and i used a ratchet on the compressor side, i cent get the thing to move.

2. How much do normal places charge to balance shafts? Ive got this other turbo, but its got a t4 exh side so i cant just swap exh sides on these 2.

Left handed threads.

Did you run it without a filter or screen? That wheel is dunzo.

Looks like you were trying to grind up a cinder block with that thing!

Are you sure you didn't suck something in causing that damage??

I had a turbo get out of balance enough for the blades to contact the housing and I drove it that way for a few weeks without chiping the blades like that. I bet you sucked something in.

At this point, you most likely will need a new shaft, compressor wheel, bearings, and thrust assymbly... in other words, everything inside the center section.

Sure looks as if you've sucked something in the turbo from not running an air filter.. not from wheel contact to the housing.

Funny thing is, i had a filter on it. i donno WTF has happened lol. But BLAAST said he will see what he can do. It looks like im looking at somewhere around 275 for a rebuild with new shaft and wheel. Killer prices. Lets see how it turns out.

damn...how much was the turbo to begin with

$275 is a cheap, for the amount of damage that turbo sustained. Hopefully he can salvage the housings and backing plate, as those are not cheap at all. Blast has insanely cheap pricing on rebuilds...

Re: So my shit blew up already.

THe rebuild I can do for cheap is a preventive rebuild.
You know, the kind of rebuild that i say everyone should have done to a OLD turbo of unknown condition prior to use it.

This turbo right there, was CERTAINLY in good salvageable condition before. Maybe it looked ok, but it's condition was unknown and not warrantied. using it as is was a wild guess and a very expensive one.

depending on the model of the shaft (stage 1 or 3) and on the need of other major parts such as backplate and housings, it may get more expensive.

Re: So my shit blew up already.

i mailed that turbo to Blaast today. Had to use UPS, the USPS wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount. It looks like i may have got "lucky", Backplate looks good and it seems to still spin good. but when i was driving it, it wouldnt make over 2lbs boost and was ------ hot as hell.

I got the turbo for a really good price. Turbonetics are kinda pricey new.

I had a turbo end up looking the exact same way once. Shaft had to be repaired, stage 3 wheel replaced, machined for larger bearings, and then I had a 360 deg thrust bearing installed. wasn't a fun bill

the reason i asked is because to me, itd be a better bet to start with a different turbo imho

How many times do I have to tell you. Its a turbo, not a Dremel. haha, shitty luck man. that looks like an old K03 I had that blew up because the nut went in to the compressor.

you say you had a filter on it, i say you sucked something in....is any part of your filter missing? for example, some cone filters have a little metal cap on the inside that can get sucked off. they are only held on by shitty glue

Well I plan on getting in contact with blaast once I get a job, but yeah these kind of posts are scary... Tell us you sucked something in! ;D

Re: So my shit blew up already.

Yea.. I'll bet that rebuild is more than $275.
If Blaast lets you out the door for under $300, I'd be a devoted customer forever..

If you didn't suck something in, there's still a problem.. Need to figure out why that turbo loosened up enough to allow contact. Once it contacts it's WAY out of spec and it gets expensive.

Some turbos are right hand thread, some left.. I've seen both. You can figure it out just looking at the threads on the shaft in most cases. The compressor turbine usually doesn't come off easily and honestly, it's easy to bend the turbine shaft, so be careful..

That thing is wasted!
