So I got a free car... Turbo time now

I was sitting in my driveway 2 days ago working on my brothers car when my neigbor came up and offered me their old car. It was going to get donated but he thougt of me first. all it needed was a new battery. bitch runs great.

1995 volvo 850 turbo
transverse inline 5 20v 2.3 or 2.4 liters
160 hp
fwd

I was curious if anyone knew these cars and how they respond to more boost... just a boost controller or something

any turbo motor responds well to more boost, just make sure you add more fuel :6

just chip it, more fuel and boost together

Over here we get the 850 T5 which is the 2.3 5 cylinder engine. Plenty of people running 3-400hp on the standard engines. The T5 has a bigger turbo and probably loads of other bits, but volvo's are all solid.

Check out turbobricks.com for more info.

I think SloS13 has some friends that have a turbo Volvo wagon called the death wagon. It's pretty quick, 13s I think.

i'd get a boost controller and turn the boost up to figure out where the map cut off is then just rock the boost 1 psi below that.

its gay that a volvo only puts out 160hp from a boosted 2.3

i made a big turbo setup for a volvo once. THe guy used it for drag racing.
basically We used a stage 1 t3/t04B 0.63/0.70 H trim. a new wastegate was needed but other than that, the thing was bolt-on.

Re: So I got a free car... Turbo time now

ive been reading and it seems that wiith a bigger turbo, exhaust, and a chip, 300 hp is easy.. toss in a transmission cooler and even the auto can handle it.

how hard was it to replace the turbo?

I'm hoping to keep it smog legal because cali sucks fat dick for modified cars... i'd use a e-cutout and maybe a chip that can go back to stock.... how much would a bigger turbo change emissions?

i would just pass emissions now then buy tags for as long as you can, hopefully 2 years. then after that mod it how ever you want. 300hp is east on those motors. changing the turbo will be easy just go with a thunderbird on nissan .60/.63 and it will support you 300hp goal and can be found on ebay for under 100 bux.

after you emmission it take the cat off i hearde of people getting like 18hp on the dyno on those cars just getting rid of the cat

Re: So I got a free car... Turbo time now

alot unless you leaned it out for emissions

alpalwal 12-30-2006 03:07 PM

Re: So I got a free car... Turbo time now

alright... so the t-bird or nissan 60-63.. how much of a direct bolt-on is that? Is the volvo turbo t3 flanged already?

also, any tuning companies that you guys know and like?

BLAAST 12-30-2006 03:16 PM

Re: So I got a free car... Turbo time now

t bird and nissan 60 trims are the same specs, except you got flanges on the t bird compressor and more convenient 2" and 2.5" spouts on the nissan one.

Volvo in 95 had Mitsubishi turbos with odd flanges. Far from T3. An adpator plate would be needed. The older volvos have a euro style t3 flange, with that stupid round recess in it but still, it can be ground and transformed into a real T3 flange.

Re: So I got a free car... Turbo time now

alright. so ill need an adapter plate.. how about oil lines and all that ----... bolt on?

BLAAST 01-03-2007 02:00 PM

Re: So I got a free car... Turbo time now

actually if you go T3, yes, on top of the adaptor plate, you will need new oil fittings and preferably the whole lines as well a a new downpipe. Don't worry, packages including everything you need are available.
