smoking turbo question
i got my turbo hooked up bet no exhaust or charge piping yet. I know i'm running rich as balls. now my question: if my turbo is smoking when i nail the gas is it possible that is just from being rich that it smokes? There is no oil in the intake side of the turbo. I just want to figure this out before i buy a restrictor valve. This is on a d15b2 by the way. thanks

only to like 3 1/2 k...i'm not that stupid ... i just wanted to make sure my oil fitting weren't leaking

what color is smoke,how much smoke, and if to much oil pressure builds up i know some that are worn out can leak. but you would see that in comp housing prolly.

you cannot run a turbo w/o some kind of oil restriction..... ur seals will 0wn you. when the motor revs up you hit about 80 psi and 80psi will kill ur seals.... go get the oil restrictor and save ur turbo!

Chk the color of the smoke. Blue or white.
THat should tell you if its the gas or oil. |

yea..i think my oil pressure is way too high...i don't have an oil pressure gauge hooked up yet..so im ordering a restrictor from stealthy in a second..thanks for the help guys

Hey guys!
Don'T forget there's no seal in a turbo! Well there's actually one under the backplate but this one never leaks or blow at all.. So no, you can't "Blow the seals" on a turbo. there is piston rings at each extremity of the wet section and they are NOT tight. If oil is forced through them, they will leak. But at that point, the turbo is not broken and no seal is blown. You simply fix the problem that makes the oil overflow in the cartridge over the C Cllip level and the leakage problem is solved. http://www.blaastperformance.com/image/banner-2.JPG |

the compressor housing has a seal on it, the exhaust seal is there primarily to prevent exhaust gas from entering the crankcase

Well, if we are still talking oil leaks here, any gasket under the compressor housing will not cause any oil leak since it only sees AIR.... :-[ The rubber seal under the backplate, as metionned before, unless you forget to install one, will rarely be the cause of an oil leakage.
the turbine-end piston ring, if it gets worn out, is the main cause for turbo leakage. It might in turns allow some exhaust gases in the crank case but I never verified that. (Maybe because when the turbo is emptying itself everywhere, you don'T have time to worry much about some exhaust gases in the crank case!! :)) |

well I have the same problem.
So what Ive done is get my 2 stroke mikuni jet box out. Drilled up a blank jet with a 1.5mm hole (What ole corky recomends) And have forced it down my oil tube. I dont think my oil presure is too high. But why take a risk. DId do a test hooked up the oil line to a bottle and started the engine. It drained the sump or arround 1 Ltr off oil in like under 10 seconds. No way the turbo needs so much oil. So toped oil and tommorw morning will take it for a spin to see if it the problem is resolved. Hopefully its gone |

the turbo will have no restriction and will spin faster than it was ever designed to. Not a good idea.

If the turbo has to leak, it will generally leak through the turbine end first.
If oil leaks into the compressor housing and not through the turbine side or under the turbo, it's one of two problems: #1 the thrust collar piston ring (or it's groove in the backplate) may be the damaged #2 a too restrictive air filter (dirty?) may create enough restriction to turn your compressor in a oil pump because it's gonna try to suck oil through the bearing and thrust collar. It's easy to find out, just run the car with no filter for a little while. and see if some new oil appeared in your charge pipe. |

oil leaking through the exhaust side is usually not busted seals, it's caused by ''blow by.'' which is an exaggerated amount of oil pressure or under-piston crank pressure. yes, i think a restrictor valve can relieve this. however, if you're running a low compression engine like 8.1:1 a lot of blow by indicated by oil leaking or being forced through the turbine side, you're motor's fucked.

THe dam thing is still spewing white smoke.
Did the following 1. Checked the plugs clean. 2. DId a leak down and compresion test all engines showin 140-145 psi. 3. Checked oil filter. 4. Checked crank case vents. 5. Checked oil level dosent seem to be going down much. 6. Cleaned and checked air filter. 7. Oil flow verifed against Corky bells numbers restrictor in. It only happens when the engine is run hard for some time. The smoke color is white for sure. Now only thing left is to chk if coolant level is droping. So far no oil in coolant. |

maybe your getting to much oil pressure to the turbo, try getting a oil line restrictor valve and see what that does...
