Smoking bad

Well over the past few days my car has started to smoke, and it's getting bad. I'm assuming (and hoping) it's because the turbo is getting too much oil. I've already ordered an oil restrictor, but did any of you guys have to re-do the seals in your turbos after you added the restrictor? What if it contiunes to smoke?

once the turbo starts smoking the restrictor is really just a bandaid

yeah, basically the pressure of the oil has fucked up the seals and they need to be replaced right? Which seals need to be replaced and how hard is it to do? I really wouldn't want to fork out for a rebuild kit if i could just change a few seals (that is if i can find where to get them from). Anyone good with this stuff?

Normally if you take a turbo that far apart you might as well just rebuild it.

yeah but as far as i know, when i got it, it was either rebuilt already or new. And i've only put about 8K miles on it....

wait for a while after you get the restrictor to see if it clears the problem up..

yeah it's definately helped a lot. Before i was choking at stoplights cause it was so bad, now it only smokes after the car has sat for a few hours and i give it a good run. After that it seems to clear up. So i'm assuming that some oil drains into the exhaust after i shut it down, and once i warm it up, it burns it off. After that though it's not too bad.

I just don't wanna choke the turbo for oil, i'm assuming this is where an oil pressure gauge comes in. If i get one, how much PSI of oil do turbos generally need?

i think about 25 -30 psi is what they like and after that it starts leaking.. i read this somewhere in the forum but cant find it now.. i may be wrong though

Re: Smoking bad

well today i started changing my oil....

and ended up taking off my turbo :P

Which resulted in a half-ass rebuild. I took off the center section, and then took it all apart, cleaned it (there was shitloads of burnt oil on some parts) and found, that there was a burnt up o-ring near the turbine wheel. So i ran to the hardware store and replaced it, and then put it all back together.

Haven't had a chance to run it yet, but hopefully with the restrictor, it'll run clutch
