smoke from valve cover

so today i popped my hood while my car was running and smoke was coming from the breather hole in the valve cover. i dont know if is normal with a turbo car or what. i have always had a hose hooked to it when i had an intake on. and now its just open? normal or no normal?

Excess blow-by. What's your pcv setup?

Ok...the valve cover I'd just toss a breather filter on to keep dirt and dust out. The stock pcv that runs from the intake manifold to the block is your issue. Plug the line from the manifold, and just run a tube from the block pointing towards the ground. Vent to atmosphere ;) Pcv valve is mostly for emisisons crap anyway :P

Would a slashcut into the exhaust help it out any?

i suferd the same problem in my dsm's. the one engine was burning oil and i never figured out why but the other did not burn oil. however they both did that when runing very hot. ya the whole blocking the pcv sounds like a real quick fix. id try that too.

HAve your compression checked dude.. >:D

I am affraid What you're seeing is the exhaust leaking from your blown ring lands.

What the hell are you talking about? Was that an anti-DSM statement or something?

more of an anti 4g37. haha. no. we gotta keep dsm around, they make good turbos.

All dsm's should be parted out, more bov's, injectors, and turbos to go on cars that are somewhat worth a ----. (honda btw) :y

you should build a catch can of some sort...its nice to have a little bit of vacuum on the crankcase

Re: smoke from valve cover

it's actually really good to have a free breathing crankcase, that allows the pistons to reciporcate without the atmosphere putting restrictions on the movement, especially in a boosted engine.

Exactly. I've tried most every pcv setup out there. Slash cut, pre-turbo intake, open atmostphere, even a funky combo of pre-turbo and manifold vacuum with one way valves. Honestly the best one on a boosted motor was the vent to atmosphere setup. The slashcut was ok, worked best when you were hard on the throttle. Only problem is a pcv valve isn't 100% open at full throttle, only during part throttle crusing, so the slashcut was pretty much pointless.

Why did you make two topic of about the same ----????

Re: smoke from valve cover

Right now I have the combination pre turbo and IM setup with one way valves. It seems like it be better than the atmopshere route because its actually creating vaccum for the crankcase...helping vent out the pressure better. ???

sound right or does it even matter with the atmospheric vent for positive pressure in the crankcase
