SMOKE COMING FROM BREATHER VALVE.....HELP
 

i ran a search and seen a lot, but i just have to hear it on my own thread....

well, cars been running fine but my oil pressures been at 40psi for a while now.
i also have a oil leak coming from i have no clue...lol
its right at the oil filter but i thought it was coming from the oil sender unit but its not.

then today, i get home from work, start the car and BAM, smokes coming out my breather on the valve cover.....
please tell me whats going on, show no mercy to, i can take it...

im planning to run a compression test also, thanks

Well it's hard to tell until you do the compression test but smoke out the breather vent is a good sign that either your rings are gone or your ringlands are broken.

:-X I'm afraid to laugh. Karma has been a bitch lately. For all I know, I'll go fire up my car tomorrow morning and notice some nice oily smoke coming from under the hood :'(

That's what mine did your rings are toast. You probably broke the ringlands Probably #3 cylinder seems like it's the most common to go first. Mine always did at least

yeah, unfortunately, smoke coming out of the breather is a sure sign of blow by, which if you're lucky is just rings, but most likely rings and ring lands. have fun :-\

thats not true is it.....cause with a simple rebuild it would be back on its feet right???

yeah, some pistons and rings will take care of it, and more than likely need a good hone if the broken pieces scarred up the cylinder walls. definitely salvageable though. if you plan on boosting in the future, you may as well replace the piston's and rods with forged pieces while you have it all apart, if not, this WILL happen again, sometime, almost guranteed :-\

Yea...didn't wanna break it to you over AIM but its your rings. It happens just rebuild and boost it again. You can't really complain tho u gave that motor hell...and how many bottles of nitrous has it seen haha? i think she served you very well :-\... I'll try to keep my motor alive and avenge you on the track :(

yeah im not trippen that hard off it tho, just time for rebuild, im diff gona get low compression pistons and rod thats a certain.

also just for my knowledge......

n e one know why a fired ring would cause the smoke to come out the breather hole???

like was that smoke or just pressure/steam.....is it from oil burning and sqeezing pass the pistons????

yeah, if the rings/ringlands are broken/fried/toasted/etc., then oil gets up passed them and in to the combustion chamber

my car has lots of blow-by with no smoke AND sometimes oil squrits thu the dipstick
are my rings gona go soon? ( sorry boostman for jackin the spotlight for a sec ;) )

Nephew had same problem with oil shooting out of dipstick hole... and oil fill hole....
Had burned a hole in the piston.
Happened all at once though. The whole motor was coated.
Do a compression check... It will reveal quite a bit.
Just get a rental from AutoZ@@@

so that's what the ---- is wrong with my motor, I get smoke and oil out of the valve cover breather. this was when my car was NA, now I'm boosted on fucked rings, no wonder 8 psi kicks like 4.

but check this...the blow bys started to decrease, its still there but its not bad like it was 2 days ago....does this mean anything???


also....i also notice my boost psi drops by 3rd gear...1&2 its at 10psi (normal) but at 3rd its at 7-8psi

also....got something esle to share....

having done a compression test yet but i pulled each wire off one by one...

ever wire i pulled there was a visual electric spark at the coil (msd blaster coil) except when i pulled the 3rd wire.....nuffin happen

my engine did the same when i broke ringlands on 3 pistions, compresstion test only showed one bad cyl but it was 3

i think it happeneds when you run too lean and the cast pistions expand to much, they rub on the cyl walls and break. but i could be wrong

a catchcan cannot save your engine from too much boost and piss-poor fuel management, it just catches oil.


I don't know if that is one of the causes, but the way I understand it when you run too lean, or with too much timing the air fuel mixture ignites before the spark plug does, and when the spark plug lights it the 2 flame fronts rip each other and the cylinder components a new one, raping your rings and ring lands.

for me i know im not running lean...

think mines come for age plus running the hell out of the motor with i had nitrous (before boosted)

i use to empty a whole bottle on the highway with a 75 shot.....lol.
