The smaller side of holsets to make approx 275whp . Hy30 hy35

Hey fellas, im running a 16v 4age 1.6L currently at 220whp at 16psi on a 14b. I want more top end, without sacrificing to much spool since i autox and roadcourse the car. Ive ruled out the $$$ capt. ------- ballertown garretts such as the gt28rs cause I just cant go from a 50 dollar turbo to a 1400$ one. I'm researching the Hy35 and the HY30's, the hy35s seem to be plentiful but i have a feeling even with the 9cm housing they might be a bit to big for my setup. I can't find any info on the hy30 tho, nor have I seen many for sale. When im looking for turbos, i generally compare my motor to the b16 or d16s since they are roughly the same displacement. Im pretty sure my shitbag 14b spools pretty slowley for its tiny ass size and im willing to bet even tho the holesets are bigger they will perfrom the same with the exception of a freight training top end. Im also looking at t3/ t4E's with maybe a .48 or .60 trim, even tho the technology is from the 70s they are cheap and reliable. I don't wanan go the 16g route cause the concensus is that they are unreliable and spool like ----.

So: 275whp or so, with decent spool is the goal here.

An idea off my power delivery atm:

Heres all my math calculuations:

Using my math you can see that u need approx 380-400cfm at 14-18psi with a pressure ratio of 2.22@18psi and 1.95 @ 14psi.

Keep in mind my car revs to 8k, so a .60 a/r might work out better, ill have to look at the maps.

Don't like 20vs im a purist :D Physically tho the holsets look so freaking huge, and they aren't popular among the non dragracing big power guys which makes me wonder even tho they sound so great, maybe they aren't the right manufacturer for what im looking for.

Its because they weren't indended for gasoline, and I don't mean that in a bad way. There are better choises for power, but per $ they are great. They were designed for decent high flow, not for spool time. Since diesels run at >0psi at idle, they inately spool rather fast. They also need hi-rpm help due to pretty much the entire design. Thus...they have big housings, among other things. If you compair them to a Garrett, the housings are more radial/flat, while Garrett & others are more compact. These turbos are used in large trucks, not FWD compact cars - room is aplenty.

BTW that XML is all fucked up. I see no point where you can corelate 14-18psi working with any numbers remotely close to 380-400. Posting ---- with all calculations, or only the final result - nothing between, as that pic is confusing as hell. 6psi at idle? :S

I had a hy35 on a 2.3 ford that I revved to 6700 and it was even a bit slow to spool on it compared to a stage3 .63 hybrid.
I'm running a sc44 (60 trim) hybrid with a stage3 63 housing on my 1.8 toyota 3tc, boost comes on at around 3500rpm and pulls strong past 8000.
We had a holset hc1/hx35 with a 7cm bulseye housing on the same 1.8 and it spool almost instantly.

I doubt you would like the hy on your 1.6 unless it is a drag only machine. A regular old tbird t3 would be a good cheap upgrade and would just about get your goals.

So your saying an Hy35 or Hx35 with the bullseyes 7cm housing will help the pig spool and still hold boost to redline? Atm my 14b goes down to a measly 7psi at redline. Im at the bullseyes website and i cant find the housings.

Found this , which looks like an interestingly easy bolt on affair:

i think i would go for a turbonetics t3 super60, my roommate had one on his z6 and it made 240hp ish on a mustangon 17 lbs.

it was ball bearing and spooled up like crazy, also i think he found it pretty cheap....

The dsm guys are having a hell of a good time with the bulleyes ktis, seeing 23psi at 4000rpm on a 2.0l. Only thing is, i wonder how much off a dog it will be at something like 1bar.

Yea thats what im wondering, what exhaust housing is he using the Bulls eye one? With the smaller housing (223bux btw) it should help with spool

Re: The smaller side of holsets to make approx 275whp . Hy30 hy35

HY35 and dont look back, ---- a bullseye housing.

My old 1.6L made 15-16 psi by 5500-6000rpm

And yeah, I'll second everyone by saying that 10 vs 15-18 psi feels like a completely different turbo.

My car needs a fuel pump and then I'll let you know how it goes at 20psi.

5500 is to late for me, the beh will make it spool much quicker.

I know it's a weird flange, but if you can get the flange plate and make the manifold or have someone else do it for you, look into the 2003/2004 Evo 8 Tdo5HR/16g6's with the 9.8 hotsides. Granted this is on a 2.0 liter, but they start spooling at 2800 and full boost (for me was 21psi at the time) by 3800 rpm. They can easliy reach the 325whp range and still retain the 14b's tdo5h exhaust wheel, but unfortunately are a reverse rotation turbo with a split housing so you can't just swap housings. Still they're relatively cheap now, a complete decent mileage turbo is usually under $300 as they're considered the bastard step child in the DSM world.

Go HX35, pair the cylinders.

TTC 09-08-2008 10:45 AM

Re: The smaller side of holsets to make approx 275whp . Hy30 hy35

I could pair the cylinders and runa twinscroll type setup but then i would have to remake my manifold and im way to lazy for that. Im pretty sick of ------- around with piping as it is. Ill see , today im waiting on a manufacturer in western canada that manufactures diesal turbos whome also is making garret copies.
