to sleeper or not to sleeper

I delivery drive a soon to be hmt del sol. I am seriously debating whether or not to make it look stock under the hood by hiding the charge pipes inside stock intake and using a heatshield to conceal the turbo. The intercooler would be painted black with nicely done grill mesh to break up the pattern. A del sol, imo, looks like it should go fast; so would it be redundant to sleep the under-hood of a bright red car? OH! btw, I am not trying to conceal the sounds, just the appearance.

dont even waste your time trying to be sleeper...how often will people not hear your car at some point before you race. and who cares if they know what you have

seem like some extra work, why not be proud of the set up and show it off? any 1 with 1/2 a brain will still know your turbo. if u want it sleeper, leave the exterior and interior stock. my .02

Well I think there are a lot of people with only half a brain in my town. I was crusing the other night and some dude asked if I was "charged". I was like... you didn't hear my turbo the last 4 blocks or see that HMT sticker on the side of my car? He even said he had a big block in his honda when I asked what he had... lol.

Anyways yeah just make the outside and inside look like a sleeper... waste of time to do the engine bay. That's the cool part to check out.

I want a bov poking out of my oem intake :D If it's a DSM bov, does it still count as "oem looking?" lol

I would just not pop the hood if you don't want to give away what's going on under there. But thats my $.02

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

whats the point of hiding all that ---- in the engine bay if everyones gonna hear the bov neways so their gonna know its boosted. i think its just a waste of time. just make the exteior look stock

tomcat 03-16-2004 05:38 PM

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

its is impossible to make a honda sleeper

One everyone thinks we are slow
two if they hear the bov or hear the spool of the turbo and they know what you have

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

Ive put a mild amount of work making my car more sleeperish. I agree with what beerbong said. ------- people dont know what a BOV is when they hear it if you dont live in an import community. I know my friends wouldnt know what a BOV sounded like. They would think it was some rice can or something.

I suggest keep it sleeper so people dont bother you about your car, its less likely to get stolen, and you can slip by some stupid rich kids that think their 3 series BMW is faster than your "POS honda"

My car is so sleeper it has a dented door and a miscolored fender. Keep it sleeper for safety purposes IMHO.

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

Why don't you just keep your hood closed? :-\ The sleeper effect is mainly the outside of the car being stock and trying not to draw attention to your car being fast. Sitting there with you hood opened kinda ruins this effect.

And besides I could point out a turbo in 2 seconds no matter how hard you tried to hide it so just the attempt would make you look stupid.

NINJA del Sol 03-16-2004 07:57 PM

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

based on the information provided, I think I would rather have a fast car looking car look fast under the hood, then I'll start a complete sleeper, all the way down to skydiving smoke bombs for engine failure simulations. Thanks for all the help.

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

If the person cant figure out your car is boosted by the BOV or by the spooling they are a dumbass and probably dont have a car worth racing. The only people you are hiding it from are stupid people, I dont think theres a point.

H22 does NOT weigh much more than a B16/B18. It's a myth. It has been proven.

Sleeper!!! Oh come on do you think every mustang/BMW/firebird/camaro owner knows what a bov sounds like? Just make the outside/inside a sleeper, do whatever works on the engine bay.

B16Drag 03-16-2004 10:30 PM

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

Going off subject now, but H22 weights like ~35lbs more than the B-series... Not that much weight but if you autocross them peeps says it does... <SHRUG> I dont auto-x so I wouldnt know... I guess it has something to do with the distribution of weight (but now flames are coming out of my @$$)... so I dunno

Good call sol... Keep outside stock and dont try to hide your engine bay--no point! =)

No man pimp your ---- out, put a PHAT body kit on, big fart can, 10inch tac. screwed in your dash, and most of all don't forget the "Powered by HONDA" sticker accross your windshield...

Dont you mean Type R... that sticker is worth more power than the Powered By Honda sticker

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

i like the sleeper look from the outside but when i pop the hood i still want to show off that turbo and blowoff valve! also most people notice the intercooler first so you can just paint it black. its not like there not gonna know! i mean a big pppsshhh noise means you got something ;) dont worry about under the hood. make it look good under there and if you just dont want to show it off say the hood latch is broken and you cant open it ::)

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

if u go sleeper, ur gonna be hating urself for the attention ur not getting, if u have major cop problems in ur town, thatd be the only reason i could see for going sleeper
otherwise just rip the mic!

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

If you're doing this entirely for attention, then you're no better than the common rice boy slash attention -----.
I get all the attention I need on the drag strip, when doing mad launches and runs nobody expects from a 4x4 with a 1.6L engine...

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

I'd say go for the sleeper. I went this route for a little until everyone and their mother knew it was turboed. You really don't expect an 86 crx to be turbo. I have a completely stock looking exhaust that is really quiet, no stickers, etc. just a greddy type S BOV and a quick spooling T25 that gives it away.

I am blasting my BOV in this kid's ear and he keeps on asking is I have NAWS....moron ::)

whitey youd never know my car was anything but a stock 86 honda accord 19second 1/4 mile DX. ok maybe the 215/60/r14 yokohamas avids give it away but i hardly doubt that. i dont even have a FMIC to have visiable and my exhuast even at 2.5 inches looks like stock with a tip on it. and its quite. as for th BOV. just route it into a large airfilter and point it into the undercar area. also dont rev like and idiot. thats just a big give away.

having an ugly car helps to ;)

Re:to sleeper or not to sleeper

whats it matter if you have a sleeper or not? If you have a honda people are still going to see a honda no matter how much you have under the hood. Do what you want to make it look nice and dont worry about it. Besides, how many races have you done when someone actually asks to see under the hood?

exactly man. So it doesnt matter if your car is stock looking or nice looking. They think its a new thing to do so they'll try to race you with what car they have, even a 16 year old kid with mini-van will race you. :P
