Side Mount?

Anyone got a side mounted IC on a 5th gen?
Any pics of how you got it mounted up?

I ran a search and didn't find anything.

Re:Side Mount?

Mine is going to be side mounted a week from today... ;D

There's two inlets, one on top and one on the side. I have mine mounted on the passenger side behind the bumper and in front of the wheel. Top inlet goes through the hole for your air intake and the other one kind of goes into the engine bay from beneath. It's a tight fit, but it should work (although my IC pipes are a bitch and I have yet to get it worked out).

I don't have any pics and it's hard to describe. As far as mounting it, I had to break some tabs off to get it to fit, JB welded some rubber strips so it didn't rub against the frame and added a bracket on top and a stud of sorts on the bottom... It's ghetto, but it works. I am doing a test fit tonight and tomorrow to finish off my IC piping and I'll take few pics. :-*

Here's a pic of a similar setup from the top...

I'll get more of mine tomorrow.

I've got one locally actually. Friend has it. VW Mk4 SMIC, been pressure tested to 30psi.

Bracket Top, Stud Bottom (See the scratches on the frame by the motor mount? That's why I JBWelded rubber strips so the SMIC wouldn't rub or break).

Bottom stud close up (this is actually a bolt from the other side with those sharp, gear looking washers and a nut to keep it in place) Add a few washers and a nut to mount.

You get the idea...

The turbo to IC piping is going to be a pain... That's what I'm working on today. I'll post another pic when I get it figured out. I have to relocated the clutch cable/line (don't know what it's called) and I think my charge pipe is a just a few inches too short... :-[

Thanks for the pics man. I hope I can get everything done with the Mk4 smic I have. It's got plastic ends tanks but it looks almost exactly like the DSM one.

Re:Side Mount?

izz that an after market thing or is that like shelby is to ford ,aftermarket but from the factory??

Re:Side Mount?

Diamond Star Motors is like Mitsubishi and Chryslyer and some others... All their logos have stars in them. I don't think it's an aftermarket thing, just a bunch of goofy people who decided to group them all together into some kind of elite club. :-*

Anyway, I don't think it rubs the bumper. I mounted it and put the bumper back on and it seems to fit ok. I don't plan on having the SMIC setup for too long (maybe go FM next spring) so ---- it. The only problem is that I will have to cut the splash guards a little, but that just means more cooling air.

Here are some more pics. Running the IC pipe to the IC was a bitch. I had to make a crappy bracket to relocate the clutch lever thing (still don't know what it's called :-X). Last pic shows it mounted 2 or 3 inches below where it originally way. Enjoy!

Re:Side Mount?

You mind me requesting one more pic from you? I wanna see how it looks overall without the bumper on (if you haven't put it on yet). I'm trying to think if that little vent where the oem fogs go would cover up the smic. Cause then I could just cut of the back plastic and some of the guard to help aid the flow.

Re:Side Mount?

Amen. Air flow is what I'm wondering about too. Also, just how much good does a small intercooler like that realy do?

Wally 05-16-2004 05:10 PM

Re:Side Mount?

I'll get back with you on the pic tomorrow...

As far as airflow, it's gotta be better than nothing and that area inside the bumper is the same spot a cold air intake would get it's air from. I've been told that heat soak can be a problem, but again, it's probably good for a first time and cheap setup.

Re:Side Mount?

DSM is Diamond Star Motors. Eclipse, Talon, Galant VR4 and a few others I think.

Willy, set up looks good. Thanks for all the pics man!

T-Shirt Ninja, nice to see you posting bro. I was thinking for flow purposes you could cut out the plastic between the black grill bars. Though the IC would be kind of visable then.
