Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
I spent a day pulling my downpipe and turbocharger off of my car. It wasn't fun only because I drive the thing pretty hard and use anti-lag a fair amount, so everything is very thoroughly heated and stuck. It took about an hour to work the exhaust housing off using a vice and rubber mallet but I got it off without damaging anything, which is nice :) I did my downpipe and housing in TechLine Black Satin 2000F ceramic coating.
Prep work entails: out gassing parts, bead blasting the parts perfectly clean (scale and rust removed), aluminum oxide blasting to open pores on metal surface, and then finally acetone bath before I spray the ceramic. Once sprayed I let it air dry for about 20 minutes then moved it to the over (note: commercial oven don't try this in your house oven or even a house oven not in the house...) to the oven at 800F for one hour. The housing was in for 800F at 1.25 hr - 1.5 hr given its mass. Anyway, pics: Before: http://blowneuroz.com/mygallery/525V...oseupturbo.jpg After: http://blowneuroz.com/mygallery/E34%...bohousing2.jpg Should look something like: http://blowneuroz.com/mygallery/E34%...bohousing4.jpg When done ;) I need to clean my compressor housing but I am thinking of redoing it in wrinkle black. I dunno! |
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Looks great :)

Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Good work, much improved. You're all about cleanliness.

holy ---- thats a ------- sweet computer in teh backroundz
wrinkle black on the charge might look ugly, i'd just polish it !! |
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
I'd leave it just like that, definately don't paint the compressor housing in black.
|
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
your coolant lines are empty... gonna cook that bitch!

That looks so much better. I don't know how it'll hold up but I just painted my turbine housing with a few coats of high temp BBQ paint before I installed it. Of course I had a new one that didn't have years of rust to remove.

ive had serious problems in the past sucking in exhaust fumes making the car run like ---- |
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
offtopic, but what is your oil line feed coming off of?

no i meant qsiguy

Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
i dunno about the bbq paint, but the VHT manifold paint works really well. i did my wastegate housing and valve in that, and my manifold, and no signs of any issues after a good thrash with the valve in the wastegate the wrong way around. (to ensure there was no boost) a mate of mine has done his turbine in it, and i intend to do mine too. its good stuff.

Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Ceramic coat is the best. especially polished like a mirror, but for a cheaper coating to prevent rust, i like to use DEI paint. it makes your turbo a nice gloss black that doesn't scale off with heat. Looks very much like your holset turbine.
it's supposedly illegal here in Canada but who cares, I have some. ;D http://www.designengineering.com/ima...%20Coating.jpg |

Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
yah i've tried a variety of things now. vht flameproof, bbq stove, and por-20 2000*. Daily driving kills all of them eventually. they just aren't durable over long term. :-( and yes i am very thorough when it came to prep work.
someone please find the ULTIMATE high temp coating pleaseeeee hahaha -Luke |

ive had serious problems in the past sucking in exhaust fumes making the car run like ---- Attachment 23638 Oil is from a sandwich plate up front, The short braided line you see attaches to some tranny cooler line coming from the front of the car. The thing at the end of the braided line is a check valve to prevent oil from draining into the turbo from the line while parked. The check valve requires .5 PSI to allow flow. It's not to prevent backflow. I used the stainless line at the turbo to protect it from any heat. Check out my "94 Q45 rear mount turbo" write up for detailed photos. |
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
ah i was looking at your sig picture wrong, i thought the intlet was coming from right next to the ehust, just didn't look hard enough i see it now with the better picture.
pretty cool did you use a pump to push the oil back to the pan? |
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Sorry to jack the thread ::) yes, there is a pump in the trunk scavenging oil from the turbo. I haven't got it permanently mounted yet so I'll post pics on my thread when I do. Post over on my build thread of you have more questions, don't want be steal this thread.

Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Ya, water cooled, it's probably overclocked.
|
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Do you have that turbo back in the car yet? Anxious to see what it looks like now.
|
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Looks good (car + pc). Are there products out there to water cool the RAM? I'm guessing those are UV lights & a UV reactive dye in the water?
|
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Your computer looks like a meth lab. :S
I wish someone could produce pictures of these coatings after 10k miles or so. Doing research on any of them only leads to nice pictures of freshly coated ---- and speculation. |
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Yeah you can watercool the ram but theres not much to be gained.
I finished the wiring on the ---- tonight - its all tucked behind the other side of the motherboard - I think I am done for a while haha. http://blowneuroz.com/mygallery/Comp...puterdone1.jpg http://blowneuroz.com/mygallery/Comp...puterdone2.jpg Sorry for OT haha |

Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
Huge improvement. Very nice. Are you going to wrap the downpipe again or leave it?
|
Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
I am going to leave it - the ceramic is way more effective than fiberglass wrap

Re: Say good bye to rusty turbo housing
wait until october and the 8800 gt will be launched and wait til dec and then the new mother boards will be out
one will be an onboard gpu about the same as an 8800 and then you add in a discrete card for hybrid sli or wait for the new 780i mobo's and then throw 3 8800 gts on that bad boy and have a bad ass system for about 600 bones O0 |
