Safe Boost EGTs?
 

Ok, so I was wondering what are normal/safe EGTs for freeway driving, and where does the "danger zone" start on boosted gas engines under normal driving, and hard pull conditions? Its a turbo'd Nissan KA24DE incase that helps. I did a search but didnt pull up anything real useful.

i wouldnt put the life of my engine in the hands of an EGT, there are a few variables that can make it inaccurate. but dont get me wrong it can be usefull

I have alot of other means of monitoring my engine, but i dont want to melt the internals so i want to know what to expect under cerain driving conditions just to make sure everything is ok in the EGT department aswell :y

I know there are two diffrent sets of ranges, some put the temp. probe a few inches down the runner, and other put it a few inches behind the turbo, So i was hoping someone could give the answer to both senarios

you sorta ansured your own question. it all depends on where you put it and if its taped inside or just sorta resting on it. i think you just need to go out and test it. see what it does in normal conditions. what it does when just idleing. what it does when your wot for a while. im sure if you found someone with the same set up where you got yours and same type of gauges they could tell you what temps. im sure someone else can enlighten you with better information then I. but thats what im going to do with mine.

If taking temps before the turbo...anything under 1500 is going to be fine at anytime. Under normal cruising I can be anywhere around 11-1250. It just depends on how the car is tuned. A little warmer would still be fine assuming you aren't setup as rich as my car is. Under full throttle I aim for 16-1650 but I run race gas. Pump gas, I wouldn't go much past 1500-1550 depending on what you've got to monitor knock. Idling, you could be anywhere from 600-900, once again depending on fuel settings.

would it be better to be leaner or richer when the egts are high 1500~ does a rich fuel condition cool the combustion chamber temps?

i thought i heard someone say that a slightly leaner mixture can yield more power higer up in the powerband.........i dunno :1
