Saab 9000 Turbo and intercooler?

It's a 1987 Saab 900 or 9000, I'm not sure, but is the turbo from this car any good? Is it any good for D16Z6? Is the intercooler good or go w/ 1990 Supra intercooler? Thanks for the help. :)

It's a .42A/R, .48 turbine T3. It would spool fairly quick and work pretty good for a starter turbo set up on a 1.6 but would start making heat above 10psi and 6500 rpm.

If it's a 900 it will have a small, thick intercooler with a Blackstone core. Those ICs are great. A lot of racers weld two of those cores together to build their ICs.

If it's a 9000 it will have a giant (like 2.5ftx1.5ft) IC that's only about an inch and a half thick. It really wont fit in anything, and it's a pretty poor design, but it does use a blackstone core. It might me good if you cut it down.

i have that Saab turbo on my custom setup..and have ran it for about 10,000 miles..boost on mine comes in about 3,000 rpm..works pretty good for a 25.00 junkyard turbo,

I've got an 87 Saab 9000 T3 as well. Haven't put it on yet but it's in perfect condition and the price was right. I did check the maps and it should be a pretty good spooling turbo for an a6. I might get a .60 compressor housing and try it out as well.

ok im confused here. now i can put on a differant exhaust housing and that changes the a/r. but the trim on the exhaust wheel is still whatever.

now changing the A/R to .60 does what. longer spool time?

i think you would have to change the wheel also. i believe they are matched to the housing..think of the AR. like one of those little pinwheel fans that you blew into when you where a kid..if that fan was little you could blow on it and getting going fast real quick..now if it was larger you could get it going fast also but it would take more air and a little bit longer amount of time..the smaller the ar. the faster it will spool up but it will have to work harder to push the amount of air a larger one will..well i think im right ??

Thanks, guys for the inputs. Well, I got the turbo today w/ intercooler aluminum pipes w/ the blow off valve. The turbo fins looks new and no sign of shaft play. I'm happy w/ this turbo. The intercooler is big almost as big as the radiator, but I didn't get it yet because I don't know if it any good. It looks new, no bend fins. Sure I get this intercooler or get the 1990 Supra intercooler? Thanks guys.

Re:Saab 9000 Turbo and intercooler?

The turbine wheel on all T3s is the same. Changing the houseing is what makes the differance. (The acception being Turbonetics Stage 2, 3, 4 etc. where the wheel is different too). If you change the compressor housing you have to change the wheel too, which means the turbo has to be re-balanced.

I was asleep when I wrote my last post, it's a 42trim comp., .48 A/R turbine, that's what got confusing.
