RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

I just had the TurboXS RFL Type-H Ooodila what ever the ---- else is in the title put on my car.

We didn't have a gasket to seal it on the mount, so I used copper 888 compound and a piece of cardboard, I don't think its leaking air inbetween the intake pipe and BoV. But the fucker is just fluttering, and not making the full dump truck noise at any point of boost (I'm running upwards to 13 psi right now). And its driving me nuts.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? Do I need to shorten the spring in there? or crush the valve a little?

can you adjust the tension? maybe its to tight?

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

No washers installed, I just read up a little bit about a guy having problems with his on his WRX. Said that the BOV would not open up until he reached 40% or more throttle and below that it was fluttering his turbo (causing the compression to return). He kept trying to shorten the spring but it kept making it require more and more boost to activate. I'm really wondering what the hell I can do because I don't want this ---- blowing air back into my turbo.

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

i think the rfl you have to add washers to tension the spring more, its not adjustable by turning a knob. and if its still fluttering, you cant really soften it more cuz of the spring inside. i heard you can cut a little off the spring to releive some tension(soften) the bov so it wont flutter so much. check to see if its not stuck or jammed by dirt or anyt other ----.

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

yeah I'm going to cut the spring and shorten it about an inch and see if it works. I think these BOVs were really designed for guys running minimums of 15 psi.

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

hymmm? my bov is a turbo xs knock off and it flutters when i run a filter on my turbo but when i run open turbo or just a screen it blows off fine. i might cut it slighty and hopefully that'll work :-\

the rfl is adjustable ;)

what makes a bov specificaly used for a cerain boost level? they are all operated by vacuum, not boost

???

yup just set it softer a lot softer

Doesn't the boost help over come the spring and more the piston along with vacuum sucking on the other side. If the spring is really stiff, it might require more boost to help push the piston open and overcome the spring? That's my guess.

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

When I installed my RFL it would be open at idle. I would step on the gas and I could actually hear the bov shut. I installed 4 washers and that problem went away. It goes off very easily in my car. I don't even need to boost for it to go off. I can just get the turbo spooling a little bit and when I let off the gas it makes a low whoosh sound. It's a lot louder and quicker of a whoosh when I really get on it.

check your vaccuum (spelling) line for leaks

also dump trucks/cemi's do not have BOV's thats there air brakes bleeding off..

they can run 60psi with no BOV :) ah good old TEESELLs

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

Shortened spring fixed it.

Abaz come on, you should know this.

If you're running more boost there is more pressure to push the BOV valve up, and also generally a larger intake manifold (more space for vacuum).

Cutting the spring reduced its stiffness so its alot easier to push the valve open, but now at idle the damn valve is bobbling around so I gotta put some washers in there to stiffen it out.

Come on Abaz, don't make me batter you around :)

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

My point was just, I've never seen a blow off valve for sale that said. "Requires X amount of boost in order for it to work" Its obvious the pressure in the IC pipes are going to be pushing upwards on the valve, and if the spring is to tight it will not open. Most manufactors have adjustments on the tops of blow off valve to adjust the spring load. When I bought my Tial 50mm blow off valve I had the same problem, it would never open, or if it did you could hear large amounts of compressor surge, Even with the boost turned up it didnt make a difference. Well I found out my engine was not drawing enough vacuum, especially after I replaced the cams with some larger ones, (less vac at idle) So, I contacted Tial, and they had a 20 in vac spring opposed to the 24in vac spring, One that would open sooner, one with a bit less tension on it. So in theroy.. it really just matters is how much vac your engine is drawing.

Why are your panties in such a knot? ???

sorry abaz I thought you were some n00b posting and insulting me I've had a rough day. all my ------- fingernails are falling out on my god damn piece of ---- ------- honda god damn fucker ass bitch car. Yes I'm mad :) I'm sorry bro I mean no offense to you.

But really I think the RFLs were designed for guys pushing 15+ PSI, because the spring is so god damn stiff on them that it would take alot of burst pressure to throw it open fully (and get the whole PAshhhhhhhhhhhhhht noise).

Man chacko, all I'm hearing is ---- ---- ---- ass ---- mother ---- ass ---- in your last threads... Obviosly the car is kicking your ass ;) take a chill pill, nobody like the compressor surge noise, in fact I hate it more than anything.

Anyhow, glad you got your problem fixed, I just read your other thread about the 4-8k experience.. I dont know what to say unless you were smoking tire or smoking clutch, because I've never seen that ;)

Glad to see you back ------- ---- ----! ;D

Yeah the Rfl type H is for 12-25 psi the type s is the smaller one good to 15

cut that spring baby and it works for 2 psi :)
I lov ethe ------- sound of it, so much better then the whistling crap of the greddy BOV. Now where is Abaz I'm not done flaming at him!

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

I just got my bov in the mail and I figured out how it works... I got a turboxs too, what they do is when its in boost it pushes the valve shut and theres boost pushing up at the valve, so it fights against itself. when theres no more boost the valve gets sucked open.... kinda neat. I know all the elders know this but I didn't and I am sure a few others dont either.

Chacko 03-18-2004 10:02 PM

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

thats exactly right. The other trick is to keep it almost closed at idle, otherwise your engine will keep boggling around to try and suck in more air for all the extra space between your BOV and manifold (its also losing vacuum through the BOV).

Re:RFL Fluttering WTF! Noo!

you bought a BOV for the ricy noise and now you can't get it to work. :P
