turn towards the front of the car to retard, and towards the firewall to advance.

also wen moving the distributor: if the idle goes up, you are advancing it. If the idle goes down then it is retarding it.

Are you running an AFC? Otherwise I can't see why you would want to retard it that much. You will also need to jump the two wires under the dash or the ecu will not retard the timing. Jump the wires, turn the car on, loosen the distributor, turn it clockwise to retard it, tighten the distributor, turn the car off, un-jump the wires. Turn car on and go.

Have you ever checked a cel(check engine light) on your car before? You jump those wires together. They are near the ecu on the passenger side. They should have a blue/green(sorry I'm color blind) wrap on them. There should be two connectors. One has two wires and the other has three. You need to use the one that has two.
