Was it a rebuild kit off ebay? BTW a old turbo is like a old motor you must check to see if you are going to need bigger bearings.

Pressurized oil.

And like they were saying parts wear down a bit over time and you may need oversized bearings to make up for the loss. You can put factory seals and bearings in and still have play.

Up and down is fine as there is play until the turbo has oil and is spinning. As long as there is no in and out your good.

i am confused
i thought in and out was thrust / up and down

Re: Rebuilt turbo has up and down play

in/out is thrist, side to side is bearings, generally.

b20beast83 03-04-2009 06:54 PM

Re: Rebuilt turbo has up and down play

let me see if i got this right
in and out is shaft play right
and up and down is thrust play?

Smith-02 03-04-2009 06:57 PM

Re: Rebuilt turbo has up and down play

ITS ALL SHAFT PLAY for fucks sake.

martirw 03-07-2009 05:45 PM

and its all bad

Cause im not going to read this thread anymore...

Rebuilt turbos, even NIB turbos can have shaft play. It is more normal then most think(this thread proves it). Put it on the car, let it cycle some oil in there and the play should be less noticed if not gone. The shaft and the bearings can not be so tight as to where there is no movement, if that was the case youd just feed shavings from your turbo to the engine.
