Rebuilt Turbo dripping oil w/ removed charge pipes
 
After installing a rebuilt T3 from Westcoast turbo, I noticed oil dripping from the compressor outlet of the turbo. The charge pipes are not connected and my -3AN line feed pressure is 25 @ idle, and 75 @ normal driving. Should I get a restrictor valve, The return line seems fine, could I be wrong, and lastly does this indicate bad turbo seals? Im almost there please help.

Yes- I'm running a .060" on my t3/t04. You've probably blown a seal at his point.

Thanks for the input M2cup. Im gonna get one. But do you think Ive blown the seals, being that the charge pipes were never connected, and the turbo never built boost? The oil pressure is really too high and was leaking past the seals, but are they that fragile that they are already damaged? This turbo was rebuilt with new seals. I really hope not. But if so Im sure I can get me a rebuild kit. Right?

running a turbo without the charge piping connected is a great way to blow up brand new turbos, they spin wayy too fast with nothing to slow them down and disintegrate. Do you have any shaft play on it? Particularly in-out shaft play? And yes, you should have a restrictor valve on the turbo, it doesnt like to see 75psi oil pressures, thats too high. A t3 only needs about 10psi oil pressure to operate

Ill check, The turbo wasnt even spinning. Im gonna get a restrictor though.I was more concerned about the oil leak.

up to 40psi of oil pressure if fine but when your running 75 you will blow seals quicker then you can say oh ----.

I just checked my turbo and there is no shaft play. Thats good. One more question, When I put the restrictor on the turbo, wont I have to put one on the oil pressure sender to get the same reading that the turbo has?

a restrictor really isnt going to do you ----. hook up the charge pipes or take off the turbo untill your ready for everything. the turbo actually uses the boost pressure to help seal the oil out of the compressor housing. no charge pipes= no boost=leaking oil.

A worn out turbine-end piston ring or the groove it sits in is the most common cause of oil leakage on journal bearing turbos. Just installing a new piston ring doesn't always do the trick. If the groove was worn out, machining it larger and using an oversize piston ring is necessary. If you can move the piston ring in and out on the shaft even slightly, that's gonna be a leaker for sure.
