rear turbo set ups??

I raced a turbo z28 today which was rear turboed, and just saw a post on a rear turboed audi i think.

Is there any benifit to doing that... looks like alot of piping that needs to be ran and if you had a ic thats even more lag time.Lags not bad but that might be a little much. THen wouldnt you loose pressure for spoolin the turbo with it being so far away from the engine.
IM just curious, never seen that ---- before tonight. whats the bennifit to it other than not having to fab up a mani??

It's a whole lot less laggy with 5.7L pushing exhaust gas than a 1.6L. The only Audi I would consider doing that to is a V8. Benefits: cooler engine bay, more room in the engine bay, stealthy install that fools the police

For a grass roots style of doing a remote mount setup on something a bit smaller than the LS1, check out http://www.khturbo.net
Advantages are piping is really easy to route, since you use the stock exhaust routing but typically in a bit larger diameter, and then just run the charge piping back up to the front to an intercooler or back to the t/b if you are running meth/no I/C. Also, if you have a car without a whole lot of space up front for a turbo setup, you can still stick a snail under the ass end.

The main disadvantage people see with the remote mount setups is the increased spool time. This can be solved by running stock exhaust manifolds and heat wrapping the piping. More heat in the exhaust pipes=quicker spool for the turbo. I'm debating going with a remote mount on my Cavalier simply because I am too lazy to actually install all the ---- I fabbed up in order to stick one up front :'(

Hope some of that helped...

QikEnuF said it pretty well. I did one on my '94 Infiniti Q45 4.5 liter V8. Only running 3.6 psi now but once I get a few issues ironed out, get the tuning done, and install the meth injection I plan to take it up to 8 PSI. If you size the turbine a/r small enough you shouldn't have any more lag than a normal setup. Starting from a stop I hit full boost around 3k. If I'm already rolling >35-40 mpg I can hit full boost around 2-2.5K rpm.

Look through the Forced Induction board for my build thread " '94 Infiniti Q45 Rear Turbo". Here's a couple pics.
