Radiator Fan On... Staging Lane Only?

I've been doing some searching and reading about radiator fans. I know a lot of you guys have them on switches or have them hardwired to run all the time... Or at least when the car is on.

Anyway, I want to make a harness that I can plug into the fan plug and possibly clip to the battery when I'm in the pits. I thought I saw somewhere that the fan won't run without the key on and I really don't want to leave my car on "ACC" or leave them in the ignition when I'm not around. But basically, after a run I would shut down, pop the hood, hook up this harness and the fan would run as long as I left the harness on or plugged in.

I'm a bit of an electrical noob and, quite honestly, my cooling system works great and I do not want to mess with the existing wiring. I just want to try and add a little something extra to help cool my car down between runs. The only thing I'm worried about is drawing directly off the battery. Would it be better to try and find a live connection elsewhere?

Any input?

I think your making it way too hard for yourself. All you would need to do is run a wire from your positive battery terminal into a switch and then to the fan. Splice it into the positive wire on the fan. Then everything would still work like normal, and you could flip your fan on anytime. ;)

I'll check that out, thanks!

Everything I've seen makes it sound a little more invasive. :P

don;t do it that way, you'll burn the wiring up due to the amperage drawn by the fan.

The quick and easy way.........

Simple SPST switch and 6 foot of 16-18 gauge speaker wire.

Wire the switch in parallel with the fan switch on the thermostat housing. Simply splice each wire into exsisting wire, then the switch completes the circuit. This will allow the fan relay to carry the amperage and no car fire.
