Default questions about catch can in boosted apps.

so, after doing a lot of reading, i've come to this:

Blow by is causes by gasses above piston seeping through to crankcase due to bad rings. that gas then mixes with oil, and causes positive crank case pressure. that pressure is bled by the PCV (which is a valve activated by the vaccum in your intake manifold), back into the engine to be burned again. That gas/oil mixture lowers octane rating when recirculated into the intake stream, leading to detonation. so we use a catch can, which basically filters out the oil before it gets to the intake.

My question is, The PCV is activated by the vaccum in the intake manifold, if we're boosting there isn't any vaccum, so it would only open when not in boost?

SOOOO, could i just hook the signal line to something like the downpipe or pre-turbo intake? since its just a signal line, it doesnt suck anything up right? just opens the valve?

I'd suggest for any PCV/catch can questions you try a search over at honda-tech.com I had a lot of questions and theres literally hundreds of topics on this subject with all the info you could ever ask for.

I'm a simple kind of guy. I dont give a ---- about thermal dynamics and overly-big words for no reason. HMT posts are like talking to a friend whos explaining ----, not like studying mechanical engineering out of a ------- textbook.

H-T Post: a simple piston operated engine works on the process of intaking atmospheric air and mixing it with gasoline. it then is drawn into the cylinder, compressed by a piston, and ignited with an electrical spark, forcing the piston downwards.

HMT: your engine sucks in air and mixes it with gas. its compressed, sparked so it explodes, and that makes the piston move.

brought back since I'm looking for an answer to the same question. I read ***** writeup, and posted a question but no reply in days...

when the pvc valve is opened it vents the gasses through the same line that opened it. so in a boosted situation the most common are just putting a filter on the crankcase or you can hook up the pvc line to the intake side and run a catch can. you can run the line to the downpipe then you wont need a catch can. but as far as i know you cant have a the intake open the valve and then have it vent somewhere else.

the engine re ingesting the blowby and crankcase gases severely lowers the octane of the incoming air/fuel charge in boosted engines fostering detonation. Just take it and use a breather and vent it to the atmosphere

---- a catch can, just route that stupid hose towards the ground.

hell mines vented into the atom towards my manifold.. i have yet to see any ---- come out.

catch cans are bling bling items imo.

You must at least put a filter on the breather hose, because otherwise the engine can draw in dirt through it.
Now, the ultimate thing to do for big power engines is to put a vacuum pump on the breather. It's worth quite a few hp
because the rings seal better and the aerodynamic resistance inside the engine goes way down.

I beleive my crankcase is buidling pressur eunder boost and cauing my sleals to leak, so I'm trying to learn of ways to relieve the pressure.

Vacuum pump, exhaust jector if you're running open downpipe or inlet jector.
