questions about a big turbo

3 Attachment(s)
so i pulled this turbo off an international harvester diesel engine, its a To4B18, .60a/r cold, 1.32a/r hot, i have no idea about any other specs on it, but it spins perfect and has no play at all.
now my car is a 94 accord with the f22b2. my question is, well im pretty sure the answer is no, but do you guys think i could even get this thing to spool? if not, is it possible to put a t3 exh housing on it, with a .63, or .48a/r? here are some pics....(not the actual one, but the same thing)

thats pretty badass free turbo. i dont know if it would spool on an accord but either way you lucked out

Re: questions about a big turbo

If you were building an sfwd motor, then you would be okay with the T4 1.32ar but as a street car, it would be rather unsuitable. However I am sure you could find a smaller T4 turbine to put on there. Iirc going to a T3 Hotside would require a turbine wheel change as well.

Put a 150 shot on it, it will spool just fine >:D

Exhaust sides a bit big... FOr a stock block f, COmpressors money... Its a T4.

---- it, try it. LOG is your friend

block off plate.

+1. Or, I guess I'm really +2 on this one.

IIRC the outer scroll will spool slightly faster. And don't listen to that SFWD stuff, a 1.30 is what a 6.5-7.8 liter gas engine needs. The S372 units most the SFWD guys are running come at 1.30 AR T6 flange and then get a 0.8-0.9 AR T4 housing swapped on for laggy spool with minimal top end restriction.

Re: questions about a big turbo

so.....lets say i block off the inside inlet, run a log mani, bump my rev limiter up to 7,000 (stock redline is 6,200), and add bisi's turbo cam to the engine, is it do-able?
i really would like to have some boost built up by around4,000-4,500 rpm. hey BDV, your running a t4 on a 2.2 liter right? when do you start to get boost?

BTW, im only looking to run about 10-12 psi

I say go for it.. can always "customize" that turbo as needed.

The third pic owns you. 3.25" hole to hole = T4.

I have seen a number of 9.xx- 10.0x fwd cars running 1.2x+ T4 hot sides, but a 1.30 T6 never, that is for the 355cid motor I have waiting for a chassis. The hot side pictured is a T4 not a T6.

+3 on the half block.

Re: questions about a big turbo

Thats funny. I've got what I think is the exact same turbo sitting in the trunk of my DSM right now. Of a International DT436 from a Case IH 1480 combine and was found on a whole lot of international powered equipment. We swapped it off for a holset H1E, which was a very nice upgrade BTW. Makes less boost with the 22cm housing on it, but runs cooler EGTs and has a bit more power. Smokes less.

Its going to end up as a turbine engine.

It is a T4

Big Pipe 09-11-2008 07:24 PM

Re: questions about a big turbo

did you run it on your dsm ever?

No. After seeing the difference in that diesel from swapping to the holset from this turbo. I don't think I would really want to. Obviously it may perform fine on a difference engine though.

I definitely like the holset stuff a lot better than any of the older garrett turbos.

put it on and call it a day, you wont know unless you do it,

And if you dont, you will alway rue the day you didnt

Re: questions about a big turbo

It's a TO4B. That means the turbine is T4 as well as the compressor. Unfortunately, the TO4B don't come with anything impressive compressor wise. Yours could be the S or V-trim. The S-trim is small and the V trim is 55.4 IIRC. Either way it's a terrible sized turbine for such a small T4 compressor; it would lag and not have that impressive of a top end. Those turbos are PERFECT for converting to a T3/T4. You'll need a 68 or 76 trim turbine wheel, a hotside that'll fit the turbine wheel, and a rebuilt kit. If you run it like that you'll be sad. It'll spool very late (a lot of those T4's have P-trim and H-trim turbines lol) and the compressor isn't very miraculous at all. They're made for low boost on big motors, not high boost on small motors hahaha. Since you got it for free you'll be able to convert it to a T3 for about $200 and have yourself a solid t3/t4 cheap. I do that all the time with throw away T04's.

^^^
+1. swap that hot side to a t3 and it will be good

Big Pipe 09-11-2008 09:08 PM

Re: questions about a big turbo

is that something i could do my self with just the housing and wheel? or would i have to get it balanced afterwards?

Scott-EP 09-11-2008 09:11 PM

Re: questions about a big turbo

no, you need to send it to someone.

i know blaast has gotten somewhat of a bad name around here, but he put a 60-1 t4 compressor housing on my .60/.63 t3 and it has been badass. he also machined my turbine housing out for a t4 "N" trim turbine wheel. i guess the only t3 part of my turbo is the turbine housing, lol

crx2211 09-11-2008 10:04 PM

Re: questions about a big turbo

Just make sure you send it to somebody who's Garrett certified to re-manufacture turbochargers. Somebody who pirates parts out of a pile of blown used turbos and uses Chinese rebuild parts will only build you a questionable product. I definitely wouldn't recommend Blaast. Sure the guy knows specs on components and all of that, but the product of his I've ended up with was miserable.

Re: questions about a big turbo

well, upon further investigation....(getting stoned and looking at it). it looks like the hotside is 2 separate wheels in 2 separate housings......if that makes sense lol. i think a block off plate may be in my near future :y
now i just gotta find a manifold for an f22b2 with a t4 flange O0
