quad turbo setup

if my 88 civics turbo works will turbocharge my 79 malibu 383 (the forgotten&ignored car) it runs 12.3allmotor it will go hi 10s w/nitrous(never used at track) i want to build a new 383 with 4 small chrysler k-car turbos home made style with a goal of 800hp at the flywheel or 2 t3/t4 turbos what is your opinion

Re:quad turbo setup

My opinion is it would be a waste of time, money and four turbos. Why not just use one big ------- turbo and call it good. I'm guessing you are going to yank these four turbos out of the junkyard which means that they will all be worn different and putting off slightly different cfm/boost. Don't waist your time. If you really feel the need to cram a bunch of ---- under your hood just use two of them. Four turbos would be the biggest pain in the ass. :-\

I agree, use two, one per exhaust side.

2 t4's

Re:quad turbo setup

yeah go with 2 turbos (one for each side) so you keep the exhaust piping and charge piping simple. I hope you're going to fuel inject that 383. I've heard properly jetting a carbed setup for turbos is basically impossible...you'll likey be way to rich down and/or way to lean up top as jets aren't progressive with rpms heh.

J-SMITH69 07-02-2003 08:00 PM

Re:quad turbo setup

jets are progressive with the amount of air coming through the carb...

Re:quad turbo setup

i would probaly go with 2 grand national turbos(t4) with 20psi which will be more realistic than 4 turbos because i couldnt figure out how to intercool 4 turbos and i want to go 9's + keep it streetable by lowering boost via boost controller

J-SMITH69 07-03-2003 12:02 AM

Re:quad turbo setup

running 9s will take a lot of hp and a lot of traction.

Re:quad turbo setup

that manifold looks like it was made for tourqe. so maybe that engine isn't meant to be spun to the sky. all tourqe all acceleration :)

anthony88 07-03-2003 08:02 PM

what turbo is big enough

the turbo in the picture is a t3 from a 300zx i want two buick grand national turbos does anyone think that will work

Re:quad turbo setup

do a search on yahoo, i think there is a company that went back into making the GN turbos.

Re:quad turbo setup

First off, that looks like a T-bird/Meurker/SVO turbo, not a Nissan T3 300z turbo. How can you tell? loook at the compressor housing, Fords use the huge inlet that bolts on, and the 2 bolt discharge off the compressor. Depending on what size A/R the exhaust side is, those turbos will ------- work GREAT for that setup. To small? josh just be quiet, This turbos are not going to get you 800hp, but, they will more than likly hit 5-600ish in a twin config. Lots of guys on the yahoo blow-through group use these turbos on TT V8's they are perfect for low-budget setups. let us know how your setup turns out! If you want serious power, I would go with a larger spec T3/T4, or possibly a straight Twin T4 setup.

Re:quad turbo setup

Abaz is right, that turbo looks like a T-Bird/XR4TI/SVO turbo. I have 2 in my backyard. They have a 60/63 a/r and are perfect for a V8. In that pic, it looks like the exhaust is going straight into the control arm. not much room under the header for an exhaust pipe. Anyway, where there's a will...

My friend has a GN turbo but I'm sure he is not willing to part with it....He's had it laying around his house since the early 90's I think ::)

I did the homemade twin setup with a FI LT1 motor.. works fine! Your working along the same lines..

This is a stock 350 right now, will be adding better heads and forged pistons later on. Currently set at 11.3 psi..

That yellow car is Bruce from 2quicknovas.com. its running twin t3s off fords and they are sized very well for what he is doing. I know guys that have gotten into the low 10's and even high 9's with a pair of them. Also his manifolds turned out pretty nice for his first try. They are made out of schedule 40 pipe. check out his website for some finished pictures.

Here is a sample.

Re:quad turbo setup

those are awesome projects...

I personally would just go with two Holest y's instead of dying to find the t4's from the GN's

and accordpersonwhoever...you're stupid. Those two turbos are more than enough to get a large displacement SB into the 9's. Traction is as easy as tub's and 33" tires. No biggie. And with a properly built SB, suck as a larger 410/415...it won't take much boost at all to get there. There are plenty of N/A SB's in the 9's N/A with streetable CR. 10.0:1, 10psi per turdbo, good tuning, tubs, bg tires, good cam...you're there

Actually I know guys running 9's on 28x10.5 slicks. One guy is doing it with drag radials.

Re:quad turbo setup

Well.. I don't know if mine will go nines on the stock motor or not. I probably won't lean on it that hard, until I get some forged pistons. Here is a short video of a little testing on the twins..
11.8 psi on 93 octane, 10.5 - 1 stock compression
BOV leaking boost, still making 11.8 psi at intake (who knows how much at the turbos..? :o )
3400 rpm stall, 31 x 16.5 Hoosier Quick Time DOT tires (time for new ones)
Anything over 1/4 throttle is 8-9 psi.
At the end of the video, we are driving at 45 mph, downshift to 2nd and stomp.. listen to tires (in spite of BOV leak and exhaust gasket blown, hear the tick? ;D )
The reason it sounds funny at launch is due to zero traction in first and hitting rev limiter (6600 rpm) faster than I can shift... ::)

Re:quad turbo setup

what kind of trannmission is that? and what rear end gears. the car looks pretty damn fast. i can break em loose in 3rd by rompi on it but i have a m20 & .373 rear end gears. i'm assuming your gears are a lot shorter than .373

texlurch 07-12-2003 06:39 AM

Re:quad turbo setup

Yeah.. it goes ok ::)

It has 4.11 gears, but with a 31" tall tire. The transmission is a T350 with manual valve body. It goes better now, since I shut the BOV leak off ;D

Future plans are for forged pistons and better rods. More boost and some nawwzz.. should be BIG fun!
