prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

are anyone usin prothane inserts? if so, how does it feel? a big difference in wheel hop? Did it help you gain better traction? Also should i just save up and invest for hasports or will this do?

I'm using stock mounts filled with 3M chasis polyurethane... ;D Work the same and is cheaper

Haha, Semnos style mounts. nice thinking there semmy, sounds like a good alternative.

There is a write-up in the projects page on using 3M window weld Polyurethane....the same thing...

aqgreed i also window welded my motor mounts.

I had them for one day and took them out the same day. They rattled my teeth loose.

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

Yup...now my interior is vibrating like crazy and i didn't fill up my rear mount.
No wheel hop at all...with a stock ride height ;D

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

Havent used Prothane motor mount inserts, but am using the Energy Suspension motor mount inserts--virtually the same thing.

They will DEFINATELY make your ride vibrate a bit but will eliminate the wheel hop off the line.

What I did was use the 3M window polyurethane sealer stuff along with the inserts--kind of like gluing in the inserts into the mounts and filling up spaces not filled by the inserts. You can usually get the 3M stuff from windshield repair shops--got mine for like ~$17 for the tube. It takes a couple of days for it to dry if you are JUST using the 3M... If you use the inserts also it takes less time.

Results are essentially the same whether you use the inserts or not, just a matter of waiting longer before you put it in the car--if you dont wait long enough *SPLAT* they come out the instant the motor puts pressure on the mounts.

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

Do you guys think this method of construction will work on other mounts.. say some sbc mounts? I was expecting to fab up some solid (all steel) mounts for the volvo v8 project, but this almost sounds like a good plan. Do the mounts being used have to be new? I have some worn out old sbc mounts lying around some place that I could play with.. then again a new set of sbc mounts costs like 12 bucks so I shouldn't be such a cheap ass :-[

Anyways, these things will be put to the test for a fairly heavy motor with high torque.. just wondering if this application could cross over to the RWD world.

Oh, and if you are wondering, the RWD cars motor mounts (left, right, and transmission) won't prevent wheel hop, the application is purely to save energy in the transfer, cause normally you lose a good amount of torque from a clutch drop when your motor twists - instead of the driveshaft doing all the work on the differential.

Just some hybrid thoughts, comment anyone if you follow my drift.

Inserts suck for dailey driving. You can def. tell the difference but every thing rattles.....even after you pull them out.

I actually used both on my setup.. energy insert along with the 3m window weld in there too. With all 4 mounts done I've never had so many damn vibrations in a car in my life. It felt like they were solid, I could jack the car up from the engine and it wouldnt move. Eliminated all my wheel hop

Gotto luv the 0 wheel hop ;D

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

I use them. They rattled bad at first but it's not so horrible anymore. I still have wheel hop ::)

They aren't bad at all though. My mounts were SHOT before I put 'em in.

nice lil writeup Jeff

still any input on my v8 situation?

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

Me and my buddy made some solid steel motor mounts for his 520ci caddy engine in his 68 Ford Truck. I couldnt beleive it, but the thing hardly had that bad of vibrations, I was expecting the worst when it really wasnt to bad. Motor mounts for v8's are easy :P

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

Yes, I know I can fab some up.. but ---- I have some bad mounts laying out around someplace, If your trick works for the hondas.. is it worth my filling them up?

Then again, for the cost of that tube of window weld, I could probably buy the steel to fab the mounts.. I'll get to it when I get around to it.. maybe a writeup?

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

I say try the window weld on your old mounts Quadnie. I also have Energy suspension inserts. I bought them to get rid of hop and because one of my mounts was torn. Its a easy fix for an old fuct mount. I would imagine yould get alot more vibrations w/ the steel mounts then the poly-u. My only consern is that the motor would still twist some but not bad w/ the poly-Us. Just try it. If you dont like em, sell em on ebay!

i have used them, and i like them.

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

It's the wheel hop with a front engine/RWD car, it's the loss in torque cause the regular mounts will bind up when you hit the gas hard. Steel mounts are nice cause the weight transfer is directed right into the frame, so if you had a big enough motor and a shitty enough car, the frame will twist (I've seen this happen with mustangs). Subframe connectors need to be in place before installing a high torque monster motor. I'm thinking about just going with the solid mounts cause I know they won't budge or lose any precious torque. The mounts I pulled out of the K5 were ------- toast.. then again the entire frame is twisted on that thing from someone hitting something really bad underneath (it also pulled the transmission cross member clean off and fucked up all the drivetrain after that).

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

what if i were to put the inserts in the two front positions and leave the back mount alone, the vibrations should be less right?? ???

SpankedYA! 07-04-2004 03:25 PM

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

Yes but you wouldn't really be helping the rocking problem fron to back. May be a waste of your time.

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

I used 100% polyuerethane roof sealer from home depot. No inserts or anything. The vibration is nothing compared to what you guys are talking about. It's really not bad at all for me. ???

Re:prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

ok; if one were to have torn to ---- mounts on the side of the engine (the tranny and timing belt mounts) would getting some inserts and the poly fill stuff fix them?

or would i need to get new mounts???

one mount is torn where i dont want to use it and the other the inside is complely ripped out. all the rubber is still there though

I used to hate my mount inserts, got them from nopi. But now I'm kinda used to them and they don't bother me. They do make everything rattle though.

my hatch is gutted and some of the sound damping material removed so i'm not too worried about that.

it'll just add to that race car function over form persona that makes me all wet

Filled mounts.
Same here, COmpletly guuted except for dash and door panels,(all rear plastic and sound deadening) Sure I rattle, but I don't care.

Re: prothane motor mounts inserts, anyone usin them?

Holy back from the dead thread!

It really depends on your set up. Driving is not bad. Sitting at idle is when you'll get some, if any rattles.

If you're susupension is tight or you have newer springs/struts, you'll get more rattle than worn out OEMs.

I do think the 3M stuff is harder than the inserts... I don't know why. I did the 3M inserts first and it drove me crazy. I got Energy Suspension inserts and they're a little softer and more tolerable.

By the way, they will help with wheel hop but they won't cure it.

Ya, it doesn't eliminate wheel hop. I still got bad wheel hop with mine filled.
