problem w/ T3 on mpfi d15

so the other day i put a "new" volvo turbo on, it seemed to be in great shape.....and 5 minutes after i install it, it seemed i blew my head gasket (white smoke-tons, and crap coming out of the breather.). the engine is an mpfi d15, its been boosted for a while. so i threw a rebuilt a6 head on, d16z6 head gasket, along with arp head studs, which i torqued, loosened, and re-torqued several times to "stretch" the studs. everything went very smoothly with the head swap, then, 30 seconds after i re-start it, while its just idling, it starts billowing white smoke again. its running PERFECTLY too. no "blown headgasket" symptoms, such as stumbling, running on only a couple cylinders, etc..... granted, i didnt drive it, but it was idling and reving fine.
could my problem be that the turbo is blowing coolant into the exhaust? its an older volvo t3......oil and water cooled. please help, im frusturated. thanks in advance. -adam

no. turbos are cast so the water jacket section is part of its own, no seals it just surronds the center part.

take the turbo off and hook up a header and see if it still does it? after you swapped the head did it start throwing ---- out of the breather again?

could have a crack in the turbo housing or something along that line....

check your oil / coolant ? is it a chocolate milk color or is there any water in the oil / etc?

run a comrpession test too that i'l help ya out a bit.

^^^LOL

I would look at the turbo. It's kinda weird that it starts smoking directly after you put the turbo on. Take the downpipe off and see if there is oil in it.

I think you missed his point. He's saying why worry about hooking up the coolant lines on a $100 turbo. If the turbo was more expensive than my motor I might consider it, but no....

hmm

maybe they put the watercooling there for a reason...thats why :)

Your just not going to give up on this, are you? Oh well, to each his own....

I would just rather lose a few days off the life of my turbo than jepordize the integrity of my cooling system. I can change a turbo in a matter of minutes and it will only cost me a couple hundred bucks at the most. Oil cooled turbos seem to work just fine and have no problems lasting as long as a water/oil cooled turbo.

funny seeing that alot of new turbo's have a option of oil only..

u tell me.. is it worth over heating ur motor and possiably blowing it up when a motor will cost u 500..for a d and about 6-700 for a b (give or take ) or just replacing a old turbo that usally
only cost no more the 200 bucks? hmm thats a tuff dicussion.

btw how many turbo cars do u have?

so why did you "stretch" your head studs...that makes no sense whatsoever...

Re:problem w/ T3 on mpfi d15

they were brand new ARP's, and it is recomended by LOTS of engine builders to torque, loosen, and re-torque them a few times to get any "stretch" out of them. anyways..

tonight after work i'm going to pull the coolant lines, and possibly the turbo, and see if the car is blowing smoke still. i sure hope the engine is still good, i just dont feel like swapping it, i've done too many swaps lately and i dont have the time. thanks for the replies guys.

PS

the coolant wasnt really a chocolate like mixture before, and it billowed smoke for about an hour (had to get to a place and back to my house while it was smoking)......and it didnt eat much coolant. it was however blowing ---- from the breather. i only ran the motor for like 10 minutes so far since i've swapped the head. we'll see tonight what its like.

Re:problem w/ T3 on mpfi d15

so i ran it last night for a while. i started it up-no smoke AT ALL for a couple minutes, idled perfectly, etc.... as soon as it gets warm and i rev it a bit, it starts billowing smoke. i drive it around, engine revs fine and pulls well, but the turbo isnt spoolling that quickly (it is a big turbo, but it was spooling even slower). i get back to the house, shut it down, and start it up a few minutes later. this time, NO SMOKE, even warm, for like 10 minutes idling. then, i blip the throttle, and plenty of smoke comes.....still runs perfect, no crap coming from breather anymore, etc etc.

still billows smoke when i get on it. oh well, i think i'm going to get a CCA Rebuilt turbo, and throw it in.....after i do a comp. test on the engine. if its bad, i'll just throw my spare A6 i was planning on doing rods and pistons on into the car. thanks for your help guys-adam
