prelm ium gas worth it?

whenever im about to get my car tuned i run premium gas for a while then always after the tune, is this a waste? im only runnin like 7-10 psi

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

I would never run anything less then 92 or 93 on anything F/I no matter what psi number or nitrous shot size but maybe thats just me.I was under the impression to prevent detonation and knock you had to(or at least it was recomended) use 92+gas.

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

If you were tuned on premium, I'd stick with it. Is it really that big of a deal to you to spend an extra 20 cents a gallon?

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

stick with the premium. it's pointless to use less. you only pay like 5 bucks more at the pump. if you think about it it's only like a pack of cigs. :6

my car runs like ---- with anything but premium gas in it...

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

ive always run premium on only 8psi. better safe than stranded

boosted_b16 12-28-2006 03:23 PM

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

always premium with FI anything less has a very good chance of detonation, I usually run a 50/50 mix of 91 octane pump, and 100 octane fuel in the crx and thats 8 psi, may be overkill, but the motor loves it.

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

I don't even run anything less than 92 octane in my N/A B16. I found some gas stations in Iowa that had 91 listed as premium and had no octane higher than that. ---- that ----, nothing less than 92 for my cars.

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

I feel bad for you guys, I get pissed when I go to other states and see that 92 is the highest octane available.

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

If you are just driving not racing on it hard. I would run ---- 87 gas. If it rattles get your foot out of it. Change tune and drive. If you plan on beating on it put good gas in it.

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

i use sunoco 94...the only other thing its ever had is one half tank of bp 93 when i couldnt find a sunoco..

i just have always heard great things about their fuel, its no more expensive, and there is one near my house, so i figure why bother messing with anything else

aright, premium it is, i was just asking because i havent tuned yet so i can still tune it for whatever

We gotta hit Amoco's to get 93.

Seriously? You run mix with that and pump gas? How much is it? Still rock the same tune with that in there?

I'm in Ca too. We just got a VP Racing fuels gas station come into town. 100 octane at the pump!
5.49 a gal.

i wonder if you can just run a mix of e85 and premium

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

thought there was somthin u can buy at the hardware store that makes regular gas high octane

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

reg gas actualy make more power then premi gas.
premi just has a slower burning flame front that makes it safer to run with F.I, advanced timing and high comp

Where do you come up with this stuff? Regular and premium gas have roughly the same amount of heat energy, the only difference is that premium is more resistant against detonation.

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

I just had my fuel exam, If you take a engine and run it on a dyno on reg gas it will come up wih a higher hp(very very little)then the exact same engine and conditions with preimium gas.

my teacher proved it on the engine dyno and in his race car.
the last run of the last race last year he said y not and ran reg gas in his race car, he said it was very very minimul but the car ran its fastest time of the year/day

HMTguy 12-30-2006 06:18 PM

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

It's so little it's negligible. He could have ran faster for various reasons, not the gas.

Zeniceguycrx 12-30-2006 06:24 PM

Re: prelm ium gas worth it?

thats true but it could of been so at the track but he also did engine only dyno runs. The college used to have some sweet dynos and he used to do a few dyno a week for people and his racing

E85 has an octane rating of 105, which is higher than typical commercial gasoline mixtures (octane ratings of 85 to 98); however, it does not burn as efficiently in traditionally-manufactured internal combustion engines. The use of pure E85 in standard gasoline car engines will void the manufacturer's warranty, disrupt oxygenation control in fuel-injected cars, and result in power loss. It may also interfere with proper operation of the catalytic converter.

E85 can also cause engine damage, since prolonged exposure to high concentrations of ethanol may corrode metal and rubber parts in older engines (pre-1988) designed primarily for gasoline. Post-1988 fuel-injected cars are designed to accept E10 fuel, and may be tolerant of higher concentrations of ethanol to varying degrees, usually up to at least 20%.

Another risk is that of water contamination, which can produce engine wear directly and through corrosive formic acid in the combustion process.

Sure, go ahead and use it
