Precision Turbos

After a quick search, I have found that some of you are running PTE turbos. I have a few questions regarding them.

I know that they do not have compressor maps available. This is quite troublesome, as I would only like to have to buy ONE turbo and have it work. PTE has what appear to be great turbos at even better prices, and with Garrett quality and warranty, as well! My only issue is that I don't want to end up buying a turbo that will be over the surge line right when I start making boost.

My application is a 2.8L 6-cyl, and I was looking at the 6152SP or even their 6157SP with HP technology (billet wheel). The compressor specs of the 6152 are very similar to the GT35R, which is very close to the surge limit at peak boost for my application. However, the GT37 compressor is perfect for my application, and like the 6152 is journal bearing. Only difference I can see is slight difference in trim (.54 vs .56).

Anyone familiar enough with these turbos that they can shed some light?

Otherwise I'm going to end up picking up an HX35/HY35 and run meth injection to keep EGTs down.

i would just go with the holset

Grrr... Had a whole reply typed out and hit backspace.

Anyway, I'd been trying to avoid the Holset because of recent reports of early failure due to the higher EGTs associated with running a diesel turbo on a petrol vehicle.

Plus the lack of warranty....

But then again, it's nearly 1/2 the price, soooo......

man you can get a used holset for ~200 and people run those all the time with out failure. i dont know what that high egt stuff is about but some of the most successful, fast an impressive turbo builds on here have holsets

Well, petrol engines run a few hundred degrees hotter than diesel applications, and this has been an arguing point to some of the bi/tri-monthly seal replacements some folks have been having. Mind you, I'm running a 26-year old engine with VEs in the 70s and 80s, so I will generally have higher pressure ratios for the same flow that most people on here would get.

From what I understand, on more modern engines with VEs in the low 90s, the turbo will be spinning in higher efficiency islands to produce the same amount of power that I will be requiring. Therefore, I have to get a bit more creative when designing a turbo system :)
