Default Pre-cat delete?

My engine bay doesn't have room for a turbo without removing the precat that is welded to the header. What do you guys suggest doing if I need my car to pass inspection? Is a precat necessary to meet emissions, or can I remove it?

Inspection laws vary from state to state. There's probably a state website about what exactly they look for in an emissions inspection. The Feds would probably consider removing a pre-cat to be tampering, but (usually) aren't the ones enforcing emissions laws.

Thanks for the response Matt.

I'm in NC, and in my experience, you pass as long as the check engine light is not on. So I guess my question is this: does precat removal generally set off the CEL?
