porting the HF manifold

I have been wanting to port my HF manifold, but i ended up welding the turbo to the mani. Should I still port it or would that not be good because of the particles getting down in the turbo? kinda a no brainer but i am just courious. would the particles even see the seals? just courious...

Re:porting the HF manifold

I wouldn't do it unless you remove the exhaust housing from the center section and blow it out really good after you're done.

Re:porting the HF manifold

why did you weld it?

Re:porting the HF manifold

make a long story short, it was being a pain in the ass, and i had to redrill the flange, and i fucked it up. so i welded the adaptor plate to the manifold, then the turbo to the adaptor plate. -so it still flows nicely. but its all welded together.

and i think i will just leave it as it is. :-\

THATS HMT ALL THE WAY ;D if it still works then leave it til it breaks ;D

^^^thats what she said :P (old skool comeback)

but yeah, my entire set-up is 100% homemade :D

Re:porting the HF manifold

Shove some toliet paper down the runners and ATLEAST port match the hf manifold, you dont have to go hog wild on the fucker. Then blow it out real good and you will be fine.

Re:porting the HF manifold

just clamp the manifold upside down when you port it? no shavings or carbon crap should go up to the turbo right? Good luck

lol, you obviously have never ported a HF manifold, the metal shavings get everywhere, I mean everywhere, in your sleeves, hair, socks, it just sucks. I got a cast iron double cut porting bit from the house of tools, thing cut though the metal like butter, I still spent a good 5 hours porting that manifold, they have much to be desired.

Does anybody have a pic of a ported HF mannny?

Slo_crx1 01-19-2005 12:38 PM

Re:porting the HF manifold

I gotta agree with Spencer on that one..they do suck, and the ---- gets everywhere :-\ I use a titanium cutter, cuts ok, but doesn't eat through it as nicely as aluminum though. I spent probably about 3 hours on mine and set it to the side cause i got sick of metal shavings all over, but i'll finish it when i actually get the turbo on. Never really realized how small those runners truly are :P

Re:porting the HF manifold

I've ported my cx manifold, used a die grinder, i even ported the head a bit hehe..does the hf manifold have dinky ports or something? The cx didn't need to be ported out that much.

When i say porting i mean portmatched btw.

HMT-Admin 01-20-2005 01:07 AM

Re:porting the HF manifold

Port matching only takes a few mins vs fully porting the manifold which would obviously take alot longer.

I say port match the fucker and call it a day.

Re:porting the HF manifold

agreed port match is fast and easy and most people cant handle hours of porting :)

I"ve got 50 hours into my Y8 head 8)

Re:porting the HF manifold

lol 50 hours? he is probably using a dremel with sandbits then.

Spenser 01-20-2005 04:08 AM

Re:porting the HF manifold

no, actual porting bits, but i'm using a air die grinder instead of a electric, so its slow going :'( But just incase you didn't know, profesional head porters like exospeed spend up to 70 hours on a head. ;)

Guy-Fast 01-20-2005 04:20 AM

Re:porting the HF manifold

There bullshitin you dude. I can bang a head out in 5-6 hours manifold in 1 hour. Most headporters can do it under 4 hours. 70 hours LOL. Oh I do this stuff for a livin so I have an idea of what it takes

Guy-Fast 01-20-2005 04:23 AM

Re:porting the HF manifold

70 hours so they spend almost a full 2 weeks of work porting a head LOL thats classic. Wow they make what like 8 bucks per hour ya right. I cant stand exospeed those guys are full of ----. There super power crx hasnt even run 13's yet I ran faster times on honda pistons on my d16. Oh I dont like exospeed.

Spenser 01-20-2005 04:24 AM

Re:porting the HF manifold

you really think its bullshit, for a complete head build, combustion camber welding, everything. ok 70 hours might be more for like some v8 heads. But alot of guys spend atleast 30 hours on a honda head.

Re:porting the HF manifold

There ------ retards then. If you have ever worked with cutters and a good grinder it's very fast. Oh and I can post some dynos of my old d motors with this mystery 6 hour port work that works. I'll get them up asap

Spenser 01-20-2005 04:32 AM

Re:porting the HF manifold

what are you running for your d-series? I"m aiming for 13s with my d15 ;D

Guy-Fast 01-20-2005 04:34 AM

Re:porting the HF manifold

a very fast one. I'm not really goin to let all the info on the motor due to it racin in street stock next season. high compression, weber carbs, big cam yada yada 12's

SkunT 01-20-2005 06:38 AM

Re:porting the HF manifold

::) 70 hours. maybe by hand. :-X

i am gonna try to get her ported tonite. write up will follow. ;)

Re:porting the HF manifold

I love these headporters who claim to take a week to port a head. While they have huge shops/race cars/ and nice tow vehicles sure. Make it 4 not 40.

Re:porting the HF manifold

I would port match it. Sucks its welded up though.

I would separate the exhaust housing from the center section and then just flush it out with water after your done. That way you can go nuts and have the assurance that you can clean it out afterward. Then just bolt it back together.

Fulcrum 01-26-2005 01:51 PM

Re:porting the HF manifold

If you flush it with water. I'm thinking you should flush it backwards i.e. in the opposite direction the exhaust flows through it.No sense in forcing metal in to the turbine area if you dont have to.
Why not just grind the welds off, port it, and weld the thing back together.

Just my .02

Re:porting the HF manifold

did you have to use specail wire/filler to weld to the cast?

If you separate the exhaust housing from the center housing you dont have to worry about anything going towards the turbine section.

Re:porting the HF manifold

good point on the serperating it,. but might be to much work, id say if your going to keep it together, takes some old rags, wet them till there damp, thencramp them down there. othere then that you might be screwed,
