open downpipe off of turbo? okay to drive?

is it okay to drive? straight off the turbo, 2.5" 90 degree bend. then it's aimed down. right now, i dont have money for the downpipe, but would this be okay to drive on? worrying about heat distribution of the exhaust side of the turbo, maybe if it's so open, that it would damage the fins.. thanks..

I know plenty of people that have theirs like that. You will be fine. In fact one of my friend's was running no downpipe at all one time.... :P

Re: open downpipe off of turbo? okay to drive?

no downpipe? i was considering that when i had money for a cheaper downpipe made.. but i just waited and welded my own 90 degree on it.

for you guys, did u guys just drill a hole in your downpipe and have a o2 sensor from there? where would be the ideal place to have the o2 sensor? in the straighter pipe going towards the back? or would on the 90 degree off of the turbo be fine?

Open DP rocks! My exh. is going to be completely stock acppet when I hit a switch and open up the DP right off of the turbo's exh. outlet... ;D Gotta keep the exh. for emissions tho and all the old people that live in my neighborhood...

its awesome for the first day or two...trust me you will be happier with a more quiet exhaust.

Re: open downpipe off of turbo? okay to drive?

mine really isn't too loud open dp, sounds bout as loud as a fartcan civic, only with an awesome popping sound like a rally car or something and a crazy whistling sound when i hit it. turns heads ^-^ unfortunately some of those heads belong to cops :-X

definitely ALOT quiter than my friends b16 crx with 2.5" exhaust just magnaflow resonator no cat no muffler.

btw i put my o2 sensor in the o2 housing that comes on the 14b turbo i used off an eclipse gst, it already had a bung in there where the dsm o2 sensor goes.

i had the same downpipe setup as you for a week or two after i swapped manifolds and it was pretty cool but definitely attracted the wrong attention. my wastegate still dumps right out into my engine bay.

as for the o2 sensor, im also wondering how far after the turbo i should put it in my downpipe.

From Maximum Boost:

The oxygen sensor ideally wants to be as close to the combustion chambers as temperature permits. In most cirumstances where a turbo is involved, the oxygen sensor should be immediately aft of the turbo

I would never stretch to run no bend at all, especially for a long period of time. I would be worried about melting something in there.

That can't be good to run open DP. Your talking about right off the turbo NOT the dump pipe off the WG right? Dang man, your neighbors must hate you, not to mention anyone around a 5 mile radius to hear it lol.

the olny bad thing would be the fumes and the soot(sp)

I had a friend run open o2 on his talon for like 6 months until he got his exhaust made. All it had was a piece of pipe welded to get the exhaust gas in the right direction. It sounded bad ass and you could hear the turbo spool a mile away.

I'm waiting for my MIG welder so I'm running kinda open DP...the exhuast seperated itself off everytime I drive it cause I have some crappy clmaps on there. But it's usually after the flex so it isn't too bad.

Re: open downpipe off of turbo? okay to drive?

i've been running open downpipe, it isnt that bad. isnt really that loud either, and when i get on it, doesnt get loud that much as when i ran open header. i do like quieter exhausts though. when i can, im going to just end up finding some pipes, and get the rest of the exhaust together.

i finally got a welder, so it's not too long until i get it together.

Open Dp is funny, I ran my turbo for three weeks like that and i made people cringe as i screamed by. I love it how everyone looks at loud cars as they pass
