oil and water cooled to just oil?

Anyone running a turbo that's oil and water cooled? I'm picking up a gt17 turbo (2002 saab) and it's oil and water cooled. Running coolent lines for water might be a pain in the butt, can I safely block off the water ports and just run oil?

Some people say yes, I say no. The water cooled housings are thicker than the oil only unit to make room for the water jacket, the extra metal and the gap in the water jacket hold heat and shorten the turbo life. I know lots of guys that do this but I also know lots of guys with leaky turbos that make strange noises, just run the water lines its not hard.

Sounds good. I was looking at my motor today and there's a water line which T's off from the main inlet on the head and it runs to the throttle body. Can I just re-route it to goto the turbo, then from the turbo back to the throttle body?

I don't know where to tap it in, I just don't want the turbo to over heat other things.

yup make a loop from the TB coolant line. They are water AND oil cooled for a reason.

Nice to see a new user who can figure things out :)
