Oil Restrictor to turbo........ Good Idea?????????????
hey guys, I just got my turbo project done today and am excited about that. My buddy told me to but the oil restrictor and only give the turbo about a 1/3 of the oil pressure the rest of the engine see's. my Oil Psi guage says there's about 60 psi of constant pressure coming into the T, Will it hurt the turbo not to restrict it?? the turbo is a T3 and dosen't smoke at all. I cant think of why but any thoughts......?

In my case, there was way to much pressure and the oil started backing up through the seals of my turbo. It took a while for it to do that though

Re: Oil Restrictor to turbo........ Good Idea?????????????
is this kind of damage comon with giving it full oil psi? Like i said my oil psi guage says pretty much 55-65 psi all the time unless way down in the R's. thanks again

^ i would just get one if i were you. you can get one from stealthmode for less than $20 shipped i think. its just safer to have it then not.

Many companies suggest restrictor inserts or variable ones for their turbos. No first hand experience with this, I ain't baller status.
It is best though to have a gauge so you know how much you are restricting it. To the poster--Move the gauge to after the restrictor for setting it, then move it back to monitor engine oil pressure. |
Re: Oil Restrictor to turbo........ Good Idea?????????????
a turbo typically needs like 35psi vs the 60psi your engine flows for oil pressure.
over time the higher pressure can start pushing past your seals, which is bad. your best bet is to get one, use it, and have a little piece of mind. |

Re: Oil Restrictor to turbo........ Good Idea?????????????
So I had a 14b that smoked quite bit and a while ago I bought an oil restrictor from an aircraft supply store. The hole was a bit small. And the concensus seems to be that .060 is a good size for the hole. I believe ATP turbo or some other company sells them with this size hole. Anyway.. I paid 10 shipped. And It worked great.
then I got thinking... Parts list: -1 1/8NPT double male -1 1/8NPT Double female -1 1/8NPT square head plug -small length of teflon tape Of course I did have tools sitting around which I used... and maybe you don't have them. In that case... you should have them and shame on you. Dremel w/ cutting wheel 1/8 NPT tap 1/16 drill bit drill beer small screwdriver -so buy the parts... get the plug... and cut the very tip of the threads off. You will be using just the tip. NPT is tapered a bit so you won't be able to fit much of the plug down into the female but the very tip should go all the way in. -Get the double female and tap one side. This will allow the lil plug to go even deeper into the hole. -Get the lil disc of plug and cut a groove into it so you can use a screwdriver to twist the plug into the thread. -screw the disc of plug into the tapped end of the double female. -Now get the 1/16 bit and drill a hole right in the middle of the plug. -Now that all the fine motor skill stuff is done go have a beer. -put a lil teflon tape on the end of the double male and screw it into the tapped side of the double female. -You're done! No more turbo smoke... hopefully. http://img283.imageshack.us/img283/8451/img02397ab.jpg http://img283.imageshack.us/img283/5936/img02407pl.jpg http://img283.imageshack.us/img283/4351/img02411mr.jpg http://img283.imageshack.us/img283/1622/img02423ds.jpg This will go on a friend's car which has a junkyard turbo. These oil restrictors are a must IMO for older turbos but definitely can't hurt if you have an expensive ass turbo. You can do your own research on hole size but I think 1/16 is the best way to go. |
Re: Oil Restrictor to turbo........ Good Idea?????????????
by the way, i posted this writeup on HT a few weeks ago.
Gave it to 2 friends. One stopped smoking and the other we suspect the motor may be @ fault. |
