Oil Pressure!
I was wondering if you guys had any ideas you have tested about dropping oil pressure at the turbo. On my supply line I get 75 psi cruising, 45-50 at idle. Those are warm figures, too. As you can imagine, it smokes like all hell. I know a .060 restictor might work, but has anyone ever found a valve or regulator or something (and of course actually tried it) that works?

Re:Oil Pressure!
a needle valve will work.
but also remember u need to have a gauge after the valve to see how much pressure your dropping it.. good luck |
Re:Oil Pressure!
Doing a needle valve setup right now. Ill drop by your work and give you a peek.

Re:Oil Pressure!
hey specialfx does your car smoke just when you get off the gas or even when your punching it.
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
Thanks guys! It's all cleared up now, good old needle valve. Still, I can't believe the biggest tuning adjustment I've made was to my oil pressure...
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
so how does this needle valve thing work. where can i get one and how to fabricate it into the oil feed
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
how much psi should a b16 oil pressure be at idle, and cruisin , mine is at 20 psi idle, and about 70 cruisin
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
can anyone tell me how to make that needle oil feed thing
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
what is the pressure difference between oil in the crank or at the oil sender and at the inlet?
how does hose size affect it? im gonna run the vinyl hose for the oil gauge and 3/8" tranny hose to the 14b inlet line which is like 5/16" |
Re:Oil Pressure!
Needle valves are available with many different sized ends, I just used 1/8th npt because that's what I tend to use. Anyway, this needle valve deal has basically a box with a valve inside of it and an inlet and outlet. There is a little handle kind of thing on top that controls how far open or closed the valve is by closing down on or opening up on a hole with a needle. Put it inline to the turbo oil inlet, put your pressure guage fitting after it so you know pressure at the turbo, not pressure inlet into the valve. I adjusted mine to about 25 psi and it rises to about 45, which is better than 75 in most cases. I think LeeD has more info on exactly why excess oil pressure into the turbo is more than just a smoke problem. I don't really know.

Re:Oil Pressure!
thanks man, im definitely gonna try it cause that smoke is a pain in the ass
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
my idea worked. holy crap!
haha sweet i shall stick this post in FI and add it to the FAQ. |
Re:Oil Pressure!
does this need to be done on a d16y8 engine or not?

Re:Oil Pressure!
i'm new to my turbo, i don't know what is "smoke like hell" means? why would more pressure make any smoke?
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
Is there dark black smoke coming out of the exhaust? Too much oil pressure to the turbo can lead to premature failure of the oil seals in the turbo. It doesn't need a whole lot of pressure, just enough to supply oil.

Re:Oil Pressure!
i don't think so but what psi should my turbo get for oil?? also how about those "buy it" kits that you buy for 2 grand (ie. greddy or drag) don't those just run off the sending oil unit?
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
Those kits come with the right size -4 oil line that would drop the pressure enough so that it wouldn't wear the seals down. They are also NEW turbos in the kits.

Re:Oil Pressure!
so should i buy the -4an oil line or just get the flipper valve or whatever the reduces the oil pressure
and how would u know the pressure goes down.. i got a oil pressure gauage but it attaches to the block, not after the valve if i'm going to put one.. |
Re:Oil Pressure!
I would just get the -4 line and not worry about it. If it smokes than I guess you will need a valve thingy ma-bobber. I haven't had any problems with my -4.
Het SpecialFX what size line is that you are running? ??? __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
Re:Oil Pressure!
Hey shortyz, where'd you get the needle valve from? Is that gonna be a Lowes/Home Depot item?
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
What is the best pressure my turbo is supposed to have i have a TD04H turbo?
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
yeah i like to know what pressure my IHI RHB5 suppose to get...
and again, HOW do i check what my presure is AFTER the needle valve or a inline restrictor? do i have to install another "T" block after the needle valve/restrictor to attach my guage? |
Re:Oil Pressure!
Here is a diagram I just drew up for you that I did on my INTEGRA. It dropped my PSI's from 70 @ idle to 20 or below.
Additional drop also due to the almost 2ft. extra feed line of different size. Perhaps if this is good someone will put it in the FAQ. http://www.s-icon.com/images/oilfeeddiagram.jpg A pic of my temporary setup. http://www.s-icon.com/images/oilsetup.jpg |
Re:Oil Pressure!
not bad, good ---- lol!
haha so now we use our oil pressure guage for our turbos only! not for the engine psi! |
Re:Oil Pressure!
up, good post
|
Re:Oil Pressure!
Hey! New oil restrictor idea.
www.parker.com F200 Flow Control Valve $20, stainless steel. Much more reliable than the needle valve. Also, It's got a check valve in it, too. |
Re:Oil Pressure!
looks like the same thing as the one from mcmaster.com
not sure how it hooks up tho |
