Oil in charge pipes
 

I just installed a new tyrus intercooler and noticed that there was a little oil in the charge pipes and the old intercooler. Does this mean that the turbo is bad? It still boosts fine.

depends on how much and how long was it on the car for?

I've had it on my car for about 3 months before I noticed it. It's not a whole lot of oil just a film and discolor on the hot side of the intercooler. I can smell the oil burning after boosting and stoping for a light, but that could be a leak I have dripping on the downpipe :P It really doesn't bother me that much, I was just wondering if the turbo is getting near the end of it's life.

Hmmm, I'd fix the leak dripping on your downpipe before buying a new turbo. You said it's just a film inside the charge pipes, so it's not like your dripping oil inside the pipes or anything. Although I suppose it could be leaking out the exhuast housing side and burning oil inside your downpipe. If thats the case, I would just buy another turbo.

Mine is the same way.. its got about 75k hard boosted miles on it now... and ive noticed a little bit of oil in my charge pipes. No biggie. I think it still has a lot of life left. I had a friend who had a t28 and got it rebuilt, and even though it was just rebuilt, he still had a little bit of oil in his charge pipes as well. I wouldn't worry.

That's actually normal to have oil in your charge pipes. You can buy a brand new turbo and get the same thing. Don't worry about it.

I believe a catch-can will help with the oil in your pipes....looks pretty trick, too. ANY turbo car I've EVER messed with has had an oily film on the inside of the charge pipes, so I wouldn't sweat it too bad....

a little bit of oil is normal as it could have came from various places a while back and has just been sitting around.. if u look at ur turbo right after u ran ur car and u dont see any leaks from it, your turbos cool and i wouldnt worry to much about that little bit of oil
