The official internal wastegates suck thread
been fighting this internal gate forever now.
when boosting with no boost controller it spools to 9psi, then drops to 7psi. with my new mbc on it spools to 13psi for a split second, then drops to 12psi, then bleeds off more down to 10psi. i have it shimmed out at the mount point on the compressor to try to get it to sit closed in vacuum but it still seems to be open a little tiny bit. Im bout ready to find me an audi wastegate or something and do what we did to Jeff's, but I wanted to ask first if anyone has used any other turbos replacement actuators that are adjustable at all with any success, and if so what they used and how much it boosted. lemme know jason |
Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
proabably not gona help you out any but maybe consider going with an external wg? im not sure what kind of mani you got, but theres someone on here who even welded an external wg to an HF mani! im getting a fresh start with my new car so im getting a mani what has an external flange. NO MORE UNSTABLE BOOST! :D

and yes i know they welded it to an HF mani, i cut the ------- hole in the hf mani for christs sakes...you're not very observant are you? |
Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
Fook,
I'm running an almost identical setup as you on a CRX/minime. I have my turbo clocked a bit which skews the stock gate. But I also am using longer bolts and a bunch of shims (partly because I need to inorder to make it sit stock.. and then a few on top of that). With the Stock 14b gate I get 9psi with no drop off at all. Maybe try a different stock gate and a few more shims? I got an extra 14B gate sitting around if you wanna mess with it for a couple of bucks. |
Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
And if you doo end up going external you can always cut off the internal gate dump tube and weld the external onto there. I think weirracing did it to his t3 flange.

Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
Fook see your PIR post for the easy way to fit internal wastegate boost spike. ;)

Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
Isnt the Audi gates spring like 1 bar? :D

Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
So is this a common problem with all Mitsu turbos or just yours?
|
Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
Well, today I played with shims and stuff. I added two more washer to each mount point, and ended up taking them back out cause i was spooked. Free revving it was building 5psi. So I took it back out to 1 shim, and I guess I could build 5psi anyways before all this, cause it still does it, yet the wastegate opens at like 7psi and bleeds off to 6.5psi or so. with the boost controller on, it hits 13psi and bleeds to 11psi now.

Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
I ran a Volvo wastegate on my Saab t3.It worked like a drean and I never had any spikes.I had it set at 12pis but I could controll the boost by holding the gas pedal at part throttle while accelerating. It was pretty ------- cool!

My buddy is having the exact same problem, even with a boost controller.... 14b and everything... GAY! Im glad that I went ext. on my setup.... Bump for any more updates....

Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
im haveing this problem on my 14b, Im wondering if fook or anyone else had noticable cracks in their exhaust housings?
|
Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
My buddy had 2 hairline cracks, very small, nothing that would make any differences.... BTW Fook, what do you mean by shimming?

Blaze shimming the two bolts where the actuator mounts to the compressor, just putting washers between it so that it tightens it up. |
Re: The official internal wastegates suck thread
I built a very minimalist, POS bracket for my t3. It is held on by one bolt on the compressor housing. I took a stock bracket and cut it into a basic teardrop shape. The big end holds the actuator, the small end has a bolt hole. It rises super fast to ~10.5 pounds and holds at 10 pounds until 7000+ rpm. You always should be able to have the wastegate completely closed at idle. If not, port the SOB so it can NEVER overboost when it's all the way open. Then, you have created control.
