Default NOOB>>> Looking to turbo my '99 R1..

Hey everyone.. it's crazy the things you can find on the internet.. I was thinking of putting a turbo on my old racebike which is a '99 Yamaha R1 just for ***** and giggles. I don't ride it much because I roadrace a '06 zx-10r and think the streets are boring so I wanted to change my R1 quite a bit to enjoy it again. I have done some research but wanted to know what the best turbo for my situation would be.. I want to keep it small and I am thinking of an internal wg to make it easier and also thought about using an intercooler on the side but might skip that too. Any help would be much appreciated because this is a very new avenue for me..... thanx in advance.

I'd go for an IHI off an older Scooby. They are good for 170 whp, with a huge increase in torque across the majority of your powerband. It's be a very quick spooling affair. Alternately, any of the T25s off of the japanese imported Nissans or off of the 2G Eclipses would provide 200+ whp with what is still a fairly quick spool.

True, turbo bikes kill even experienced riders. Frank hasn't ridden his turbo R1 since it threw one of his friends off while going through an intersection. The friend got run over by a car, and the bike coasted until it tipped over into a grassy ditch w/o a scratch on it.

185 mph with a predictable and smooth powerband isn't the problem - a sudden twitch in power because you weren't perfectly smooth while feathering the throttle, or god help you the wastegate line comes free and she spools to the moon before you can react, and you aren't getting control back. Still, it's one hell of a ride and I can understand the temptation. I just advise you to bum some rides - and better yet, test drives, in decently quick turbo cars so you get a feel for the powerband before you hop onto a turbo bike.

PS - it is customary for n00bs to post pictures of their ride(s), and of naked women. Get with the program, holmes!

thanx for the info guys.... I understand your concern & appriaciate it. that twitchy throttle does make me a little nervous but I did plan on streching it to TRY to keep the front down & sumwhat under control... I watched a turbo R1 video this afternoon & it came up in every gear...with ease... looks like fun but that's just me... as for nudie pics.... I will post some when I get back home... don't really keep too much on my treo. thanx again.

I gave up on turboing my 06 R1. To fulfill my fabrication needs I've been making my own exhaust system for my STI and making an exhaust for my friends turbo civic.

I think next I will make non-turbo exhaust for the R1.. lol.. Titanium.

Why not trying a small non-ball bearing GT turbo such as the GT22 ? Those are way small yet still able of a STRONG 250HP and they make models that are externaly wastegateable too.

I will look into the gt22.. should I look into an internal or external wg? thanx for the info. I am still in my racing career through the summer but plan on mockup this fall. in the meantime I wanted to get the turbo & make some other plans with the bike... ie. chrome, bodywork, paint, swingarm etc..... I will keep u posted.
