No boost in 1st gear?

Ok i was wondering what would cause no boost in first gear the turbo spools i hear it the blow off valve goes off but on the boost gauge it shows 10inch's in vac. I've had two different turbo's do the same thing i had tdo5h(14b) and the turbo now is td05-3. My setup is tdo5-3, custom manifold, b18b1, 450cc blacktop injectors, custom boost chip(josheph davis), front mount npr intercooler custom endtanks, custom intercooler piping, dsm blow off valve crushed. In second, third, fourth, fifth, i see boost my waste gate is at 6 psi on the td05-3, on the 14b 8 psi. my vaccum is 20 inch vac on idle.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

where what do u have the guage vac line hooked to

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

so maybe it's my boost gauge i think it's tee'd to many times and the vac line is garbage maybe swith lines and see what happens right?

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

Hold up. You get boost in other gears and not first? If you got a BOV goin on then your definatly boosting. Check your vac lines otherwise.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

ya i think my bov is off by a few psi b/c i can hear the bov at even 0 vac when i shift.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

at 0 vac you still have air moving through your charge pipe and if you shift your bov will open and have air rush past it and psssssh.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

If you have vaccum at wot in first then something is wrong.. either the gauge is reading wrong or you have a restiction some where.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

ya cuz even NA cars have 0 vac at wot.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

so if i was to unplug the upper intercooler piping at wot should have zero vac right?

Todd 08-22-2003 09:54 AM

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

yep.. and it should be almost instant. The reason you have vaccum normally is because the throttle is shut. its possible your throttle is not opening all the way.. Check to see if it is. The reason you would see boost in the higher gears is your probably have more boost.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

ok cool ill check that first thanks.
return with results

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

ok test results :( i don't have any vac a wot in first but i don't see any boost by the boost gauge could this be a very large boost leak? i have boost in sencond. The throttle is opening all the way at wot. Any more suggestions?

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

What turbo are you running? How much boost does it pull in second? How fast are you going through first? its possible it can't spool in time.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

td05-3 in secound i get the full 6psi. I had 14b (td05h) on their the other day i think the a/r on that .41 or .48 and i had the same problem. it's moving throught th vac like boost. I thought the change from vac to boost was supposed to be split second?

Todd 08-22-2003 10:46 AM

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

The change from vac to 0 boost is split second.. it then take a sec to build boost.. Depending on what rpm your at and what gear.. If your in third or fourth at a cruise and just hit the gas what rpm will you be in full boost and when will it start to build.

Do you hear any leaks? The fact that it builds in second makes me think you don't have a leak. Is the td05-3 a big turbo? I'm out for the weekend.. Hopefully someone else can help you figure it out by monday.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

yeah it's got a bigger compressor blade but the same exhaust blade as the 14b. Could it be my large intercooler maybe pressure drop?

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

My turbo doesn't spool in first either, if it does its not for very long. My trans is very shortly geared and my turbo is a little large for my application. I also can hear the BOV go off without hitting boost, if I shift at about 4500rpms I'll be at just before the end of vacuum and the BOV will hiss.

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

what size turbo do you have?

LSD Motorsports 08-22-2003 01:18 PM

Re:No boost in 1st gear?

hey i hope this helps you guys out... most likely your head does flow enough cfm to spool the turbo and no the td05 shouldnt be to big... if you have huge piping and a huge intercooler then its going to increase lag tremendously.. also if you have a semi loose coupler it may be leaking a tiny bit, so go back and check those
