Newbie, Turbo Setup specs

New here, just figured I would post up my car/setup plans...

1988 Cavalier Z24
2.8L V6
5 Speed

Garrett T25 Turbo Internal Gate
1g DSM BOV
JRC 30x8x3 Intercooler
2.5" Turbo-back exhaust
Pontiac TGP (Turbo 3.1V6) Chip reprogrammed for 10psi
GM 2 Bar MAP Sensor
Pontiac TGP 22# Injectors

and that is pretty much it. Have already fab'd the custom crossover pipe (you four-banger guys are lucky not to have to make one), but had to sell my T3 off, and there is a T3 flange on the pipe. Obviously, a T2x turbo will not fit a T3 flange, so I am looking at how to make an adapter plate for the two. Any suggestions? I would rather not cut the T3 flange off, because at some point I will be going with a T3/T04e 57 trim, stage III wheel, .46/.48 on the A/r's to make major top end. As of now, it should be hitting 10psi @ 1,100rpm, which means full boost just off idle. Should be interesting. I will get pics up later. Looks like a great site here as well. Thanks

Well, full boost at idle, when will you hit choke flow? Do you plan on using it for racing or somethin glike AutoX?

Re: Newbie, Turbo Setup specs

It's going to choke around 5000rpm, but the motor (as it sits right now) makes peak at 4500, so it should work out fine. Yeah, I like the idea of full boost at right off of idle. Autocrossing has crossed (bad pun, I know) my mind, but it will still be a street car, just not a daily driver. It is a convertible, so AutoX would be a bit hard, but fun. This is really just a starting point for the car. As I said, at some point a T3/t04e will go on, along with a .600"+ Mechanical Roller cam from Crower, and the complete top end of a 3400 V6, which has heads/intake manifold which flow about 2x better than the junk 2.8 heads on it now. At that point, 400ish whp should be easy to hit. But there are no real aftermarket options as far as transmission/axel help, and a few big hp J body guys have major issues with breaking things like that on slicks.

More back on topic, any tips on the adapter flange?

cool setup.. I like the how you can use the ecu from the tgp. Is that a direct swap?.

22# injectors.. isnt that like 231cc lbs *10.5 =cc

That seems kinda small... for 10psi

Re: Newbie, Turbo Setup specs

Not sure on the CC's on the injectors, but they came stock on the Pontiac TGP, and they seem to have done fine on that. But a set of Ford 30# Brown Top injectors may find it's way into the motor very soon. The TGP PROM is essentially a direct swap, it won't really like the 5 speed until I get the .bin file from a guy in Canada, but it will still run fine. An option other than that is a MegaSquirt unit, which I didn't noticed posted in the FAQ stuff up above. It is insanely budget friendly, and has many of the same functions as some of the Hondata/AEM standalone's for 1/4 the price. Only problem is that you have to put it together yourself. But that means no paying for features you won't use, and you will learn at the same time. And there is a huge online support network for the system. Something to look into for you Honda guys, since all of your standalone stuff seems awfully expensive.

You can PM WeirRacing (he's one of our sponsors) regarding an adapter plate for a T3 to T2. He should be able to help you.

Some parts pictures, just to give you an idea of what I am working with.

Custom Fab'd Crossover Pipe w/T3 flange
Custom Fab'd 2.5" Downpipe (2 O2 bungs)
Custom Fab'd Transmission Mount
Spare TGP Rear Exhaust Manifold
1g DSM BOV w/random pipe

Stock TGP Crossover (Doesn't fit)
SAAB 9000 1991+ Intercooler (Too Huge, maybe for a truck?)
Garrett T25 Turbo
TGP Upper Intake Manifold (Black Paint)
TGP Exhaust Manifolds (Black Paint)

Johnny Race Car 30"x8"x3" Intercooler

I may toss up some pics of the in progress motor, but gotta take 'em first. Enjoy the custom blingery. Unlike a lot of you, there isn't a whole lot of aftermarket support for my car. Everything is junkyard/custom because it has to be, not because I am cheap (but I am).

This is some good info.I'd like to see how this turns out.I have a friend with the same car and he actually asked me how hard it would be to turbo yesterday.

Do you know somewhere I can learn about your ecu setup?

Re: Newbie, Turbo Setup specs

I did'nt know the 3.1 came from the factory with a turbo and intercooler. I know that the inline 4 came turbo'd for a little while, and I know some of there V6's have blowers, but I never saw a OEM 3.1 Turbo.
