New to turbo....what do i need
Hey im brand spankn' new to turbo stuff. I want to put a homemade turbo on a d16y8. I was wondering what all i will need to safely run around 7 psi. i Have a friend who i building a kit for his car but hes up at school so he cant really help me right now. I pretty much know i need a turbom, a manifold, an intecooler would be good, oillines, and fuel manigment. But i have no idea how to put it together, or what else i would need. Thanks for any potential help.

Well man, you've pretty much got it down as far as what you'll need (minus a few small items like a bov, and somesort of timing retard), I think all you need to do is read up in these forums about other peoples projects etc. Don't be afraid of the search, theres alot of good topics and stuff thats hidden back a few pages, so try it out and read up.

WTF Do I need: (Written for me by a friend when i first started)
Turbo - well no ----...if you don't understand why you need this for a turbo kit, paypal me $100 for crimes against common sense.
Manifold - Moves exhaust gas to turbine to power turbo.
Charge pipe - gets compressed air to Intake manifold. How else did you expect it to get there?
Downpipe - gets exhaust gas to exhaust after turbo is done with it.
Oil Lines - Feeds Turbo Oil and returns it to oil pan. Cheap ---- will fall apart, clog, whatever and kill turbo.
Fuel Management - more air needs more gas. Gas also keeps hot compressed air (thus your engine too) from exploding too early. Lean = Bad.
Intercooler - Cools hot compressed air from turbo. Too hot = detonation = fucked up engine.
Blow off valve - Releases built up boost when throttle closes, and saves turbo from strain. Try blowing into a Straw as hard as you can. Now block the other end and see how hard it suddenly becomes to blow anymore.
Wastegate - Controls how much boost a turbo will make. A turbo is pretty ------- dumb, like a fish. It will keep eating and eating till it ***** something up. the wastegate dumps the extra exhaust gas out of the car BEFORE it gets to the turbo so it doesn't make anymore boost when you hit your intended PSI.
Gauges - lets you see how much boost you are running, and other ----. Not entirely needed, but nice to have.
Now you have the BASICS. Other stuff is accessories, just to make more power.
