New to this, need some advice
Hi, just found this site because I was asking around about DIY turbo's, after reading trought most of the projects and FAQ I'm getting really interested in doing something like this. Only thing is, I have a D14A3 engine that comes in my European '97 Civic hatch. And I have a lot of questions. What turbo would you recommend for this car? (It has 90hp stock.) I already read I can use a CRX manifold and make an adaptor plate to fit the turbo. So what turbo (big, small turbo?). Keep in mind we get different models of cars here in Europe, so the change of finding a turbo dodge or something on a local junkyard will be minimum. What other parts do I need that work with the turbo?
BTW: maybe a stupid question, but would a turbo of a VW Diesel work (there are tons and tons around here...)? Or does a turbo for diesel fueled cars work different? Any advice is greatly apreciated. I'm all ears and want to learn ;D |
Re:New to this, need some advice
depends on the turbo the VW's use. I used a T3 turbo off a later 80's volvo. 740 I think. Inter cooler is recomended
not mandatory. Charge pipes, something to fool the map sensor so it dosnt see boost I used a check valve arrangement.Oil line coolant lines. I made my manifold but a cx hf manifold with an adapter plate works. A must is a boost guage and an air fuel ratio guage, they tell you when something is about to blow up. I am only boosting 5 psi. when you start upping the boost past a certain point things like rods and pistons can fail depending on how stout they are. Do as much resurch as you can It takes a while but in the end helps keep things working well. |
Re:New to this, need some advice
a turbo from a diesel sould work fine and if you can ge t a good price on one buy it

Re:New to this, need some advice
I guess you are from the UK, I would suggest a saab turbo they usually come with a T3 flange and an actuator that operates at 8 psi and they are quite common in breakers yards, bonus. BTW I got a turbo from an astra van and its way too small its a Garrett T15, I didnt think they made them that small so check the size before you hand out any hard earned.

Re:New to this, need some advice
What turbo would you guys suggest for a D14 or D15 non-Vtec? I want a boost from + 3000 rpms...
Is it true that diesel turbo's are smaller? |
