New delema
ok, so i have a used turbo off a '86 turbo coupe. my problem is my internal waste gate is starting to crack. so, anyone know a place the sell exhaust housings? OR, can i just pull the internal waste gate, and just fill the whole with something like JB Weld, and use an external waste gate. Now, if i go that route, can i use and external waste gate with the HF manifold. i've heard people say it CAN be done, but i have yet to SEE it be done. anyone have any pics? i was thinking about using 2 adapter plates with about 6" of pipe between them, and attach an external waste gate on that pipe. any thoughts anyone???

Re:New delema
I was thinking of the same thing. Considering my success with m welding so far. I was thining of making a custom manifold that will accomidate a external wastegate. I have a nice crack on my exhaust housing, and it looks like its leaking alot. Still havent diagnosed it totally yet. So for all you more experienced guys, can it be done?

Re:New delema
Do exhaust housings seem to crack *that* much? I have a small hairline crack in mine.. should it be something to worry about, or just slap it on and boost it 'til it breaks? ;D

Re:New delema
mine is quite small also. You cant really see it in this pic, but you can see the end of it on the lower right side of the flapper. I am just paranoid of it. I am not done with mine yet, so I have not tested it fully. SO I dont know if its effecting my boost pressure.

when you can see light through the cracks you know you have problems, and when they are this bad, they can affect boost. It will bleed by and not spool to the proper setting. If you were to put JB weld in their, it would just melt right off. You are better off finding another housing. I have seen a few pics of the HF manifold with an external gate, but you are welding steel to cast iron.. Jeff |
Re:New delema
i also thought about the same thing b/c mine has a hairline crack also. Im pretty sure you could just stick weld the hole shut with nickel and use an external wastegate, why not?

Re:New delema
i'm sure you could.. but anytime I tried to weld steel to cast it just broke off within minutes...

Re:New delema
nickel is what you use to weld to cast. just remember to heat it up good before you weld to it
