Need advice on Custom turbo application.
OK. Haters will have fun with this one.
I have an 02 KIA Cinco. I really want to put a small turbo on it. Only running about 4-5 pounds. I really need sound advice on what exactly I need. This is what I know for sure. 1. turbo 2. intercooler 3. oil/cooland lines 4. BOV 5. boost controller 6. piping 7. exhaust manifold(turbo) Now I need help mainly on the fuel system. I've heard I can run my stock 280 fuel injectors for this low of boost. But, will the returnless fuel system be an issue? and will my stock ecu be able to tell the fuel system to add the increased fuel? Or, will I need something like the ApexI system for A/F mixture? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks For those that are wondering why a KIA? I'm different. It hasn't been done, and most don't believe it can be done. It's a project. John |

Re:Need help.
if you are running that low of boost, you should be able to use an FMU and your stock injectors. as far as what you will need, you pretty much got that part right, although you don't need a boost controller
|
Re:Need help.
you cant use an fmu if it doesnt have a fuel return...does it maybe just have the stock regulator near the tank and a very short return? in which case you could make it work
|
Re:Need help.
If you are talking about a fuel pressure regulator- I know I have one. I cannot confirm the location of it. The only schematics I can locate for my fuel system is for the fuel tank itself.
Here is a pic http://www.kiatechinfo.com/buykia_as...G/bf2c974a.gif Here is a link to tech info for my car conserning the fuel system. I have no clue what it all means. Maybe someone here will know what is up. http://www.kiatechinfo.com/content.a...cription+table And here is a spec link http://www.kiatechinfo.com/content.a...SPECIFICATIONS Once again I appreciate the help. I appologize for my lack of knowledge in this area, but we all must learn somewhere. Thanks. |

Re:Need help.
holy ---- man your car is ------ hideous LOL.
this is a joke right? like trying to make the most rice ass car and then have it be fast? and its even an automatic, wonderful. well that would be great if that ugly ass thing was fast. anyway you are going to have to learn how to weld to make a downpipe, chargepipes, and manifold. then for fuel management a fmu might work.. it depends if your fuel system is wierd and returnless. also expect the car to be down for a while for all of the test fits. if i were you i would stick with a huge shot of nitrous because that would be the cheapest and easiest. $500 for 100hp, cant beat that. all the work you are going to do will not be worth it for only 6psi. and my bet is that the ecu will freak out when it reads boost. your car is obd2 and will have many problems to overcome. |
Re:Need help.
Yes my car is Hideous. Thanks for pointing out the obvious. I know it will never be fast. Not really trying to be the fastest on the block. I do know how to weld. I weld on Nuclear Reactor components for the US Navy. I am not at all worried about the piping or manifold. I am looking for help with the fuel system. That is why I posted links. I don't have the experience that most of you on this forum have. Therefor, I am asking for help. I am not very well versed and don't even know what an FMU is. I don't know what all the tech info on those links means.
I am also tired of all these so called "experts" being afraid to do something that hasn't been done before. I do not want a nitrous kit. I am looking for a horsepower boost through all powerbands and for more that 30 seconds at a time. Yes it's also an automatic. I bought this car looking for a challenge and to do something that is unique. I get sick of people who believe that only certain cars can be worked on, and that you have to have a manual tranny. I do prefer manual tranny's. But, like I said. This car is a project. I remember not too long ago when the idea of hooking up a Honda, or any import or 4 banger was laughed out. Just because you can bolt everything on to your car doesn't mean that it is the best. Lord knows, mine isn't. And there are no bolt on's available for my car. When I first wondered into this forum. There was a statement from the person who started it that basically said that most of the people here are Honda guys, but all are welcome to share in the knowledge. That is all I am asking for. If people here don't want to accept that not everyone wants to loose thier car in a parking lot because it is the same as everyone else's then I will go somewhere else for the info. But, I will not allow a$$holes to stop me from being me and doing what I want. Whats worse? Someone hooking up a KIA. Or, Some poor bastard wasting thier time and energy talking sh1t about a guy hooking up a KIA? It's like when I'm on the street and someone wants to race me. OK- they blow by and beat me. But, I just laugh. Because they are bragging about beating a KIA! C'mon I got a slow a$$ car. That isn't much to brag about. |
Re:Need advice on Custom turbo application.
I'll check out those links when I'm on my computer (at my grandma's now) and I'll try to help you out, but I don't know a whole hell of alot. Where are you located? if you are near someone that knows something they might be able to help you. For an automatic car you might want to consider a supercharger and an afc, I don't know if an afc will work on your car since it's newer, but you can look into it. I would suggest going to a junkyard and pulling a supercharger off of something, then cutting off the part that goes into the car, and welding one of your intake flanges on there, then search for a belt that will work for you, you should probably get the belt fit before you weld anything.
I don't know much about Kia's other then that they are made in korea, but if you add too much power you might start breaking axles or trannies, I hope you have a spare car you can use. |
Re:Need advice on Custom turbo application.
ok well were here to help you on little problems but not just tell you every little part u need for a turbo kit. thays what the faq and search are for.
you being a welder is awesome and will help you a ton on this project. all you need now is a flange for your head.. take a gasket to a machine shop and hae them cnc you one. dont pay more than $40. what kind of fuel system do you have? also what engine is in that kia? i cant see those links without a login or i would help you. what a fmu does is reads boost from the intake manifold and then takes that and ups your fuel pressure to get more fuel to the engine, it goes inline in your fuel system after the pump. most go by a 12:1 ratio. they raise fuel pressure 12psi for every 1 psi of boost. yes it raises the pressure too high and can cause injectors to stick, etc but it works for low boost. i dont reccomend it. if i were you i would go with a full standalone like AEM's Plug & Play Engine Management System (EMS). that would be the best to keep it together and be very tuneable. don't think that you cant make the car fast because you can. dont half ass the project, go all out. a 12 second kia auto wagon will be the shiznit. |
fuel system could be a problem
I also could not view the technical information at the KIA site, but I suspect that a 2002 car will have a fuel system without a return line back to the gas tank. I recall Sport Compact Car superchargine a Miata about a year ago (possibly 2-yrs ago) and that car had no fuel return line. I know it made it more difficult to achieve added fuel under boost, and that a rising-rate fuel pressure regulator could not be used. The article did hint at what they did to overcome this problem. I would look for this article (maybe your library has the mag.).

Re:Need advice on Custom turbo application.
Sorry for the links not working. I know what the major parts are that I need. It's just this stupid fuel thing that is stopping me. I don't even know for sure if it is a returnless fuel system. I believe it is.And, I'm not too sure that I will ever fing a SuperCharger that will fit under my hood. That could be cool though. I just don't really know what kind of fuel system I have here is a little tech info though. I'll just paste it here.

Re:Need advice on Custom turbo application.
It looks like the FPR is built into the filter.Look at the diagram, the fuel line from the in tank pump runs to the filter and then back to the tank, it looks like the fuel line to the motor hooks to the filter next to the inlet from the tank. This is a guess on my part but thats what it looks like from that diagram. If that's the case you could run a different filter with only one inlet and one outlet, use your stock fuel line to the engine for a return line and run a new fuel line with a regulator and a FMU. Does this make sense to you?

Re:Need advice on Custom turbo application.
if i were you i would do a standalone and scrap the stock fuel system, or do some type of added injector system.
doing some sort of patchwork thing with the stock system would be too much of a hassle. (for me at least) you should look at that supercharged miata article if you want to still use the stock fuel system. fuel systems for turbos and superchargers are basically the same, they just depend on boost. also how much horsepower does this car have stock and how much does it weigh? |
Re:Need advice on Custom turbo application.
If it is tuned well, I see the tranny living about 2 months.. If its not tuned right I see the motor lasting 2 runs.. Not hating, but you gotta see it coming sometimes..

Re:Need advice on Custom turbo application.
The best thing you could do is look for a additional injector controller SMC has some fairly cheap ones that work.
The thing about putting a turbo isn't the turbo itself, but the fuel delivery. If I were you I would do the SMC and get a MSD BTM(igniton boost retard) Good luck. It will work though |
