My Turbo PIcs

Alright guys you wanted pics here you go....

Right now I'm only boosting 4psi hitting 5 occasionally. It pulls fairly well and spool time seems to be almost non existant. I'm almost wondering if the turbo is just too small for this application (42/48)

Anyways here are some pics of the setup...I have a crap load of pics of the whole ordeal so someone let me know what needs to be done to setup a project on here if you want it.

Under the hood... You may not be able to tell but the charge pipe comming from the turbo is too high. You can see in the other pics of the car that the left side of the hood is stuck up due to this. I need to fix it, I simply just made a bad judgement call in running the that pipe.

Here you can see the FMU as well as my intake pipe for the turbo. I had to make it 2" to get it to run the way I did...I was having problems putting it somewhere. Both of the ends of that pipe are 2 1/2 though so the filter could bolt on and it would connect to the turbo inlet.

Just a shot of the turbo itself. Its turbo from a dodge 2.2, year I'm not sure. It was given to me by a friend so naturally I had to make use of it. As you can see its still a tight fit, I should have had the manifold flange in the cetner instead of offset.

Anyways I have more pics but that should tide you over for now...I just drove the car 3 hours back to college. I blew off the same charge pipe 3 times, the last time I pulled off and tightened it...it seemed to hold for now.

I must say on the highway even 4psi helps a lot. I dont have to drop a gear and rev the piss outta her anymore... she just hits boost and climbs speed nicely.

Earlier I had problems (I had made a post) that I was only getting 4 to 5 psi when the wastegate was set at 7 at least so I thought. Anyways I disconnected the vaccume from the actuator and it went right past 4 psi to 10 and above. I then ran that vaccume to the TB but I'm still not getting above 4 to 5 psi. I'm guessing that wastegate is set lower than I thought, I can't think of anything else. I do lose some boost in the high rpm range but I suppose I'll buy a cheap boost controller and see what it does. To be honest its nice that its only running 4 psi right now, I really dont need to blow this thing up anyways.

I also have a 90 deg angle right offt the turbo inlet and then it goes to 2" piping up until my air filter. Maybe thats a restriction and giving me a problem...I didnt have much of an alterative on that 90 bend though. Considering i hit 10 with the actuator off I doubt thats it.... may be thats why I'm losing a lil boost up in the higher rpm's though....

Anyways hope you enjoyed my pics and my long post as usual....why can't I just be short with words.

is it a te04h? or a T3

Re:My Turbo PIcs

Its a T3 42/48 The markings on the turbo said M-10

I guess its the same one all the mid 80's dodge 2.2's had. The spirits, caravans, lebarons etc....

Random.... I wish you'd get off me about my bumper, looked my turbo pics and your still commenting on my bumper how sad!

Looks good. I always thought those cars were difficult to turbocharge because of the lack of space. Actually I almost bought a Z24 but ended up getting the sol. A move i never regretted.

That actually looks great! Going with a larger T3 would make some more power, but that turbo is a good start to get the whole process down.

Great job with it! :)

I really like how you did the hood on that car, it really helps the sunfire look more bad ass!!! Props on the turbo kit.

still not the biggest fan of the body kit, but i give you major credit for that setup...waaay more complicated overall than a civic

Re:My Turbo PIcs

Not a fan of the "transformer" look, but good to see something besides a civic turbo'd !!! I bet it rides out pretty good.

A guy I worked with has a H/I/E 99' civic Si and we raced ( I was in a customers convertable Z-28 automatic fully loaded caviler ) and he couldn't pull away from me at all !! That's a pretty damn good motor IMO.

You really do need a bigger T3, but it should be pretty easy since you already have the "hard part" done.

I'm very impressed man.. I love seeing all the stages that car went through. It is possible your wastegate is not sealing, or exhaust housing has a crack in it, this would cause the low boost situation. To compensate, Just get yourself a cheap boost controller and add in a few lbs.

Truely IMPRESSED!

Nice job man...you had a lot of thinking to do to route the charge pipes.
With the turbo in the back seems to be a really difficult job.

i'm not a huge fan of the 2.4L. My friends 99 Z24 (100% stock) broke the crank shaft in half for no reason, lots of oil and regular changes. He now has a free reman'd 2.4l from GM. We'll see how that one lasts.

As for loosing some boost in higher rpm., with a 42,48 it can't supply the boost, especially to a 2.4l. switching to a 60 ish would help tons.

Re:My Turbo PIcs

Guys thanks for the props that means a lot to me. I really wasnt impressed with my own setup but maybe I did better than I thought.

Yes the turbo is small but I doubt its too small for that amount of boost. I ordered a cheap boost controller from ebay last night. If its at home on friday when I get there I'll take 3 seconds and hook i up, test it out and turn it right back down again! lol.

I'm just happy with the car since I did it all myself, everything from body..engine, paint etc. Anyways I will get the boost controller and check that.

Jeff, I did check the wastegate for cracks when I had it all apart. I saw none and this turbo was in great shape. Minimal shaft play, no chipped or bent fins it really did look nice inside. The wastegate actuator looks brand new as well...I'm thinking the one they replaced it with was just not set at the factory 7psi...but who knows. I just know that I should on friday.

A larger turbo is in the works for later. I have a turbo from an 86 Tbird 5pd which was the 60/63 one. It needs a rebuild I think thats the next learning experience I want to accomplish.

Oh so everyone knows I made a downpipe and made it route to my very small sized stock exhaust for now.... No bov either so when I let off the gas the turbo is saying "where the ---- did this wall come from" haha

Re:My Turbo PIcs

i bet the stock exhaust is at least part of your problem

Semnos 10-06-2003 08:42 AM

Re:My Turbo PIcs

It's your stock exhaust causing it to die out at higher rpm's I had the same problem I used my stock 1.5 inch exhaust for the time being well I couldn't rev past 6500 rpm I took it of and drove it with open down pipe ;D....it took the lag away and it boosted to redline

Re:My Turbo PIcs

Thanks again, part of why I love this site so much. I always seem to find more answers and better help on your "honda" board compard to the good old jbody.org :)

I should have thought about the exhaust, maybe sometime I will just remove it and redo it again. I went from a 2 1/2" downpipe to 1 7/8" pipe right before the cat converter I believe.... I have a new muffler and everything I plan on going 2 1/2 or 3" all the way back but like many things I just dont have the time currently

Thank you again guys. I cant wait to get my hmt stickers when they get here :)

Re:My Turbo PIcs

cuz u have a big 2.4l.. i'd go w/ 3" exhaust for sure.

Re:My Turbo PIcs

You can directly swap the .63 exhuast housing from your turbocoupe turbo to your volvo turbo. I would know, I have both ( and a GS-T T-25, and a wrx, and 2 14Bs on the way ). The .60/.63 turbo has the same everything, its just got a bigger a/r on the exhuast ( I mean the same stuff on the "hot side" anyway ).

My volvo turbo T3 ( .42/.48 ) needs rebuilt and I think its too small for my needs, so when I took apart my "SVO" turbo I used the exhuast housing off my volvo turbo to protect turbine wheels on the perfect condition SVO turbo.

If you only wanna run 5psi, then thats a pretty good turbo for you IMO, but if you wanna run alot more, then I think the .60/.63 is in your future.

Hell, I'm going to run a .60/.63 on my SOHC 1.6L !!!
