My Setup

I am busy like you wont beleive... i had 3 hours of freedom today and this is what i did... i put together the turbo (was in peices for cleaning) bolted everything up except Oil lines... anyways heres some pics...

sorry about not posting pics of the IC.. im going to have to redesign the end tanks. anyways.. i put it together and could not resist the urge to take it for a lil drive down the cul-de-sac.... I know i shouldnt do it but i did anways... just really fast... like 30 seconds or so... well it turned on ok.. no CEL>???? i found this odd... it was only boosting at 5psi... well it took off... this new turbo sounds like a jet engine... and the BOV makes a whinny noise just like i wanted... theres an exhaust leak on the wastegate flange... guess im going to either buy the gasket monday at Road racing engineering... or have it welded shut... anyrecomendations on how to stop it from leaking??? no one has that gasket... i went to autozone, kragen, pepboys, napa. and my local parts warehouse.. and no one has anything remotly close to it...

heres the pics i promised... enjoy...
(sorry webcam sucks ass...)

Re:My Setup

I have one question...should have posted it on a new topic.. but oh well ... If I tap into the PCV vacuum line...for the BOV... will that work or should i stick with the FPR vacuum line...??

Re:My Setup

yeah thats what i got it off of... it was one of those newer kinds.... no major shaft play... spins freely... spools up rather quickly... im going to finish this up tommorow... as i am too tired to do it tonight... I still need to install the SAFC.. oil lines.. and modify the IC..

The IC is off an Audi 4000 or something???

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...c/fcd1af57.jpg

The AC was removed to make things easier to route.. that and i never used it anyways... feels like im dragging a cow when its on while i was driving.. so it had to go.

Im going to take more pics tommorow... and try to plug up that damn external wastegate flange on the manifold... i dont want to weld it shut.. as to leave room for upgrading in the future... but if i have to then i guess i will...

Re:My Setup

Yeah i was thinking it was a bit much.... whats good about it is that it sits right under an air scoop from a carbon fiber hood I bought, so all the noise comes out through there...

Ill either finish it today or on friday.

Re:My Setup

im currently modifying the IC... it used to run through the top half of the IC and back out through the bottom half, but im going to make it go through the whole thing from one end to the other...

heres a pic... looks like a good core to use...http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...8/fc623fb9.jpg

Re:My Setup

Ok I finished modifying the IC... Basically what I did was made it flow one way.... before it use to flow in from the top... go through the IC from the top half and flow out the Bottom half... and now it flows in from one side... and out the other... I cut out a hole big enough for a 2in PVC pipe... I stuck it together using fiberglass resin... on both sides... in and out.. then i cut out the divider on one end of the IC and capped one of the inlet holes using the peice that was cut out from the other end tank and 3 layers of fiberglass... it looks a bit rough but there are no leaks...

heres some pics of the finished product.

HKS eat your heart out...

U can make your own gasket. Get a high temp gasket blank sheet and cut it out ;) good luck. Setup looks primo!

Re:My Setup

Did you say you drove it with no oil lines?????? I hate to be the voice of doom and gloom, but you may have destroyed your turbo! If not you took years off its life, turbo shafts spin at 80,000 RPM and up, even a quick trip down the street and back is to much with out oil pressure to the bearings! A word on turbo longevity,1)Never shut down a hot engine after a run, there will be no oil pressure and the turbo will still be spining. 2)After you change you oil, unhook the coil and spin the motor over to get oil to the turbo before starting the car.3)Let your turbo warm up a bit befor you make boost. 4) Always break a new turbo in for 500 miles befor trying any serious boost(this does not apply to used salvage yard turbos). I hope your turbo is ok.

Re:My Setup

i dont know if i mentioned this... but i just drove it for what seemed like 15 secs.... pushed it out on to the street.... turned it on... and took off... then i turned the engine off and cruised it up the driveway and into the garage... the turbo didnt get hot or anything....

Now, form what I have read, this doesn't nessasarily apply to oil AND water cooled turbos. From what I have read, the heat from the water keeps it circulating even when the engine is off, thus still cooling the bearings.

Anyone else heard this?

Re:My Setup

ok... finally got the thing up and running... hooked up all the oil lines and everything... and it worked ok... no smoke... or anything... I ran into a few problems... the oil return line was rubbing on the wastegate actuator rod. so it would get stuck open sometimes. but thats getting fixed. and the oil return flange on the oil pan was leaking like a bastard. used a whole tube of JB weld to patch it up. (still havent hooked up the SAFC, and injectors) but i took it out for a drive. it spools up by 4000rpm... and the BOV sounds really ------- loud. i was only boosting 4psi... didnt want to get cocky... I didnt hook up any check valves... and i didnt get a CEL. untill i hit 6psi.... thats weird??? has this happend to anyone??? anyways... it still needs work....but i need a better camera to take some better pics.... so ill post the end results when i get a new one.
