My LONG turbo post, with many pics of course

Well here is the beginning of my overly long turbo post…

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDZA...27260408781017
This was the very beginning of my turbo stage. My friend gave me this turbo so naturally I had to put it to good use right?

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDaA...27260424040877
Another shot of the turbo after I brought it home.

The next big step was the intercooler. I bought it from custom coach of America… Anthony the owner is great to work with…helped me out a lot. His website is: http://www.speedpartsrus.com

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDYA...31945022180035
I had also cut the bumper for the intercooler. I did this because the bumper was blocking about 3” of the core…. I saw that as a restriction. Anyways this was difficult to cut, the bumper material is very thick.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDKA...38934658547935
You can see here that I took the turbo apart. The swapped to a garret compressor housing because it was the clamp on filter style. You can see the one sitting to the left that has a strange 3 bolt pattern…. Oh the black tubing you see is nitrile tubing which I used for my charge pipe connections.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDTA...38934659890509
A quick shot of the compressor blades…. No damage that I could find luckily ?

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDVA...40493714560142
A pic of the exhaust turbine wheel, again no visible damage.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RwDPA...40493548058577
With an automatic trans we have less room in the oil pan area….

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RwDPA...40493594810091
So this is what I did…. I moved it over to the right. I think changeforbutton has his this way as well but its welded.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgBCG...40493880845369
Organize your oil pan bolts, they are all different sizes so be careful not to misplace them.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDSA...40493918004790
Here the fitting is bolted in. I used a 3/8 npt thread and you have to buy a tap specifically for pipe thread. NPT stands for national pipe thread just so you know.

Another shot of the oil drain fitting.

A quick pic of the fmu positioning

Here is where I cut one part of the return fuel line. The return line is the smaller of the two lines that runs underneath the fuel rail and goes to the fuel pressure regulator. I used two clamps as you can see and no leaks yet.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgAAA...40900656709619
Here is the other tap into the fuel line. I cut it way back right where it straightened out so that I didn’t have any odd bends where the rubber hose went. Also notice on this pic where I put a piece of rubber tubing where the old mount was for the fuel lines. If you don’t put something there the feed line can move around, you don’t want that to happen.

My car is a 96 so I do have an egr valve. My exploited manifold was not notched for one so I did it myself with a cut off wheel. I used the manifold gasket to mark where I needed to cut. I looked at the stock manifold to see about how deep it needed to be.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDZA...40896569257645
I also drilled the manifold for my egt bun before I put it on the car. I realize the manifold is/ was not very pretty. Like I said before I’m not much for looks in the engine bay so long as it performs.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDZA...40896564762246
This is my homemade T3 gasket. I had to make one since I couldn’t find one the day I needed it, it was something I never gave much thought before. Anyways I used some material with a stainless steel core which was made for constructing exhaust header/manifold gaskets…I purchased it from Ramchargers.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDZA...40896562274346
Ok my turbo is not a standard T3 style but my manifold is. I took the gasket I made and matched up the ports. I then made my markings for the new bolt holes that needed to be made.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDXA...40896567693959
Here is a pic of the turbo bolted to the manifold. I also had to angle grind out the edges where the bolts went so that the bolts would be flush with the metal. I also trimmed the washered edges on the bolts themselves with a bench grinder.

This is a shot of the oil feed line fittings that go into the cam tower. Its hard to see but at the end of it is the factory oil pressure sending unit.

Just a pic of a goofy guy named airtonics. My friend josh thought this pic was funny because I was stretching my leg from being in the engine bay. Yes when I work on cars I usually just crawl in there…its easier for me.

A pic of the turbo mounted in, this was when I ran it for a week with the actuator rod disconnected and no charge pipes.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RwDVA...40896576065964
This is the downpipe I made. Its 2 ½ for now I will make it 3” at a later date. Anyways I have this going to flex tubing which then goes to my stock exhaust before the cat. Its very restrictive and I’m sure its not helping my setup any.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RgDPA...41727829360600
Well here are some of the charge pipes that I made after it was all done. I posted this earlier but figured I had better include them in here as well. The charge pipe from the turbo that goes over the brake fluid reservoir needs to be redone, I will do that soon. I also need to install my 1g dsm bov asap as well.

Finally the Intercooler that fills finally the huge gap in my front bumper. Now it doesn’t look so bad since you can’t see a 3ft space between the bumper and the radiator.

I still have some bugs to work out for the most part though it is boosting 4 to 5 psi right now. I ordered a manual boost controller the other night hopefully it’s at home waiting for me when I get there. I thought the wastegate was set at 7psi but apparently not. I disconnected the actuator vaccume and it boosted past 10psi easily. So I ran the vaccume to my throttle body instead and still didn’t get much if any more boost. I’m guessing the actuator looks new and was set lower than the factory but who knows…..the manual boost controller will tell all. It’s a good thing I’m only running that amount of boost right now anyways.

I realize its not an ideal setup for many especially those going for looks at car shows. Its effective so far and we will see how she does at the track if and when I can get everything hooked up and ready to go.

Anyways hope you all enjoyed

Nice job man. I'm very curious to see what it does at the track. Should be great competition for the Honda guys. :)

automatic = launch with boost !!
2.4L twin cam = torque !!
I bet it runs 14's on 5 psi... With proper traction of course b/c "launch with boost" also equals insane burnouts on FWD cars..
