My first turbo project: 89 civic w/ an LS

Here are some pictures from my first turbo project im in the process of doing O0

Overview of the chaos
http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/4812/turbo010vk5.jpg
Look at that bling. Hopefully in wont break, it seems braced pretty well
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/8145/turbo013fe4.jpg
14b!!!!!........sigh, yeah yeah. I know it is too small for the engine blah, blah, blah. If all goes well with this setup then I plan on switch on turbo/manifold/dp to something like a T3.
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7603/turbo011mp7.jpg
My intercooler piping from the turbo to the IC. Consists of AdvancedAuto Parts crush bent piping....woot woot.
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4153/turbo018vj8.jpg
Heres the DownPipe. Orignally it was made for a d series using an HF manifold. Lets just say it looked completly different when I got it. I hacked it up and rewelded it.
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/6851/turbo019xq1.jpg
My boost gauge setup. I made the bracket from some sheet aluminum in the shop
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/3690/turbo020uk1.jpg
Oil pan drain. Hopefully its high enough.....?? Is it?
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/7973/turbo029wu6.jpg
My BOV
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1927/turbo016ly7.jpg
And here is the car with the interfooler. That was the first thing to get installed and I drove it around for a week with it on there.
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/2504/turbo005yd6.jpg

So its coming along pretty well, taking a little longer than planned but oh well. Still need to mount the EG radiator, put exhuast on & o2 bungs, then gove over everything once agiain. Maybe by this weekend. sigh.....So what do you guys think???

I think your turbo is to small bla bla bla. Im digging the crush bends. I hope you baced that mani with somthin because you gonna be pissed when you down pipe is scraping the road. Other then that it looks solid. :6

Looking pretty good. That charge piping and downpipe is gettho fabulous :y The 14b should be fine for now and later one just switch to something bigger when you get bored of the quick spool. The car itself looks nice and clean too :6

Looks good. What are the dimensions on that fmic? Your charge pipes looks great, for crush bends. Overall every thing looks good

Haha, yeah. My clutch isnt going to last long. Thats the next mod on the long list.

And yeah, I know about the manifold, but like I said. This isnt a setup I plan on keeping for a long time.

Thanks for the comments

Very clean car, nice setup. Get a bigger turbo, I've got one for sale real cheap ;D As long as you don't mind a bit of fabrication.

my best friends 91 dsm makes 430 awhp on a t66, and we built all the charge pipes out of autozone 2 1/2" crush bends, and his dp, and exhaust are crush bent 3" also i seem to remember a 600+ whp civic i saw a video of on this site a few days ago that was using crush bent pipes....

Thanks guys, hope to have it at least started on the basemap tonight, and I have a appointment to get it dyno tuned next saturday. Woot woot

The Milk Man 12-09-2006 09:31 AM

Started and drove my car for the 1st time w/ boost

Finally got my sh@t together and was able to start the car for the first time. It started first try and idle fine on the basemap, but aparently I didnt have the oil tee fitting in tight enough so oil started coming out of the back of the block. :crook: After we fixed that problem, we noticed it had a solid CEL and it would rev past 3k. Turned out we were using the new version of the stable map on the old version of turboedit. Once we made the same basemap with the same verisons the CEL went off, but still not able to rev past 4k. Turned out we forgot to take launch control off of the new base. We changed some AFRs on the base map to get it to idle better. Then took it off the jack stand and went for a drive. We drove it easy for a little bit watching the laptop and everything looked pretty close(or at least within a safe range) So we layed into the throttle in first. It ripped the tires lose, then same scenerio in second, then it pulled hard in third toward redline and thats when the F'n clutch started to slip. We made a few more pulls and change chips a few more times but is time for a clutch. *sigh* So anyway I was very impressed with the car and cant wait to have it tuned with a new clutch and LSD.

Setup
Stock LS motor/tranny

Chipped PM6 w/Turboedit
EG radiator w/ 10" slim fan

Looks good man. How much do you have invested into that kit? More pics or a video of the car would be nice.

Hmmm.... I havent went through and calculated everything, but i'd image around 800-900. I have a clutch on the way and am about to order a LSD, so that will add to the total once im through. The car is back up on jackstands now while i get the tranny out so I can have the LSD put in. But ill be sure to get some video once its is really finished. :P

lol i just read this on hater-tech.
anyways man, i know youv been getting parts from mike at lsd, why not just get a jk motorsports traction bar setup and you won't have to run that gay gangster lean on the radiator ? ;D

onlyflash944 12-09-2006 05:15 PM

Re: Started and drove my car for the 1st time w/ boost

that radiator is gansgter for sure, looks like a nice setup

where did you get your manifold, is that a ssac?

and i'm seriously considering putting in an obx lsd too, so let us know how it goes. you going to be doing it yourself?

drunkinmaster1 12-09-2006 05:26 PM

Re: Started and drove my car for the 1st time w/ boost

brace that manifold and cross your fingers. fix that radiator lean. besides that it looks pimp.
i think your turbo is a bit too small for a 1.8 , even a bit small for a d-series.
get some more pics

Re: Started and drove my car for the 1st time w/ boost

that turbo is a bit small but should be quick off the line if you get some traction ;)

I said my ------ don't dance they just pull up their pants and....do the rockaway.

Lean back, lean back, lean back....says the radiator.

Nice.

I made the manifold. It cost me the same as your chinese rig. Do the math.
