my 'custom' radiator (pics)...

this is in the FI forum cuz its for more room for my turbo :)

everyone wants to put a smaller radiator it seems. an EG/5gen Civic radiator or a Neon radiator. well i was talking to someone (think it was Beau) and we were discussing radiators and he mentioned that the old Civic's had small ass radiators in them. when i was at the junkyard a couple days later i seen a little 75 Civic. after figuring out how to pop the hood (its not in the same spot as a CRX its under the radio) i pulled the radiator. and my friend who works there hooked me up with it for cheap...

pic of the new one and the huge ass CRX/Civic genaric radiator i bought last year:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...3/fc7b40db.jpg
i also bought an electric fan off eBay for like $30, also seen in that pic

two problems right off the bat: 1) the radiator doesnt mount the same as the CRX, 2) hose is off by a couple inchs
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...5/fc7b40d6.jpg

here is how i fixed the mounting problem:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...f/fc7b40d8.jpg
a nice little braket made of aluminum, extra weight savings ;D

the extra room i have:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...4/fc7b40d3.jpg

and its slimmer too:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...c/fc7b40d0.jpg

anyway im almost finished, one small problem...the hood wont close! yeah the radiator is an inch shorter and the hood still wont shut. i have an idea how to fix it (there is a coolant sensor that can be removed to it can sit lower) but its 3am, and im done ------ with it tonight...

I though about putting a smaller radiator to, but wouldn't it make my engine run hotter?

Won't this radiator be too small for your car? I mean a turbo does generate extra load on the cooling system of your car.

Anyway, I had a simular problem with my hood after mounting the radiator in a different position (was not a Honda).

In my car the radiator supported the hood-lock beam (hope you know what i mean)and because i mounted the radiator in a different position there was no support anymore.

When i tried to close the hood, the beam (in which the lock is situated) bended down so the pin in the hood would not fit in the lock. After stiffening the beam the problem was solved.
(it took me quite some time to figure out what the exact problem was, because it was very difficult to see)

Maybe this will help you.

I want to buy a C&R radiator for a 92' civic. I know place racing makes a kit for EF's to put EG rad.'s in them but I know it cost some bank is there a cheaper way to use a 91' civic rad.

i think that i will be fine with the cooling of this setup. that fan is like a 1000CFM....

i will take a pic of my old one later. i have an 88 HF it had a radiator about 5 inches shorter than the Civic/CRX radiator in those pics (i broke it :'() but it is only a one row core, its very skinny.

btw i fix the hood problem, i removed my braket and moved the rad around a little then dropped the hood and it shut...

shortyz, here is the pic. the one behind is the one that is sold as a genaric civic/crx radiator by most shops/parts stores. the one up front is a HF/Std radiator...

Re:my 'custom' radiator (pics)...

hmmm.
i might try it to, cause the 1st gen CRX got smaller engine bay and I got very little clearance for a turbo.

i have a 93 civic with the stock radiator and fan and whenever i go on a trip to vancouver, 4 hour drive, my car heats up going up hills, it has no turbo, the fan turns on, the temp sensor works, sufficient coolant and ratio, i flushed the system, replaced the thermostat and it still wants to heat up going up long hills, and its not like i have it loaded up with alot of weight its just me, 165 pounds. Any ideas?

Thanks

Re:my 'custom' radiator (pics)...

same thing i would suggest to everyone trying to put a Civic radiator in there EF/CRX, use a del Sol VTEC (with the B16A) 2 row radiator. i believe that the stock single cam cars are only one row cores...

92-95 civics have half radiators, they make it possible to fit huge ass turbos and manifolds that place the turbo in front of the block on 88-91 civcs/crxs. my friend has one on his civic, it works great.

Re:my 'custom' radiator (pics)...

I dislike the Del Slo dual core in the ED chassis. I already lost one radiator due to it being leaned into the bumper, and there is no other way to fit the Del Slo without dangling the bottom end tank below the height of the crossmember.

Re:my 'custom' radiator (pics)...

sure there is. Use a metal strap on each side and secure it to the front cross member then the other strap to the front of the car.

kinda like that.. dont make them 100% solid though. the rad needs a slight slack to move a bit. Just tight enough to stop it from smaking in to things at the bottom.
ps I didnt realize how old this post was, o well.

was lookin under the hood of a geo metro the other day... those things have some VERY small radiators... if i was going to run a/w IC in a daily driver that would likely be my heat exhanger haha
